Hi,

Now that temps are dropping, I am concerned about moisture freezing in the air system as well as increased engine wear from cold starts after sitting for a few days. My M35A2 is a soft top with no heater (it does have pre-heater for the engine though.)

Alcohol Evaporator

Is it possible to fabricate some sort of "alcohol evaporator?" When looking at the TM's it just looks like a bottle with a hose going up the intake of the Succubus (air compressor.) Is it that simple? How is it added to the system without sucking everything out of the bottle at once? Should a lubricant be added as well? Up your nose with a rubber hose.

Block Heater

I would like to add one to my LDT. Is one enough? What is the best location? Does anyone know the freeze plug diameter(s)? Is there a particular manufacturer I should get? Do Memphis/Saturn sell any made for the Deuce?

Master Cylinder Fill Cap

I would like to check my brake fliud level (bought $60 worth of DOT5, 2 jugs) but didn't when I opened the trap door on the floor pan that leads to hell. The fill plug has a tee coming out of it with a steel line attached. Will I introduce air into the system if I take of f the tee or master cylinder fill cap? Is a fill plug supposed to have a brake line coming out of it? Can someone explain this?

Lubricating Air Pak

On previous threads there was significant discussoin about rebuilding, and lubricating air packs. What line, plug, or connection should I remove and what should I put in? I don't remember the exact lubricant that was mentioned previously. Can I just spritz some 10W30 in there with a an oil can?

Any response would be greatly appreciated.

There is a plug in the back of the air/hydraulic cylinder - I use air tool lube.

The line out of the top of the M/C cap is a vent line that is part of the fording system. There is a MWO that discusses the best routing of same I'm sure that someone else (Bjorn/Kenny?) will point you to the MWO. In the meantime, remove that line, remove the cap, top it off, and put everything back in place when done.

Never seen a block heater for the LDT - but then again I haven't looked for one - I think that there is a better chance of finding one through the White farm implement (AGCO) dealer network than surplus. Get one that heats the water - not the oil.

I had an alcohol evaporator system (surplus) but it went away in my divorce, and I don't remember how it was made - but surplus ones do exist.

Napa makes bleed kit with a check valve so bleeding is a one man job PN is in the tool catalog under KD service tools #2838 and sells for a whopping 12$...

You should be able to install a universal block heater with out issue on the truck... I know nothing of cold weather but I am sure someone here has the experience....

I use a magnetic heater on my oil pan for cold weather starts, along with a cheap blue tarp over the hood to the ground to help hold in a little heat. I use the mag heater so it can service several vehicles with it. This simple method has helped me through many winters with diesels, though it may take several hours to do any good when REALLY cold(-0). 2 hrs with the little heater and my deuce pops off easily at 10 degrees.

Thank you Mr. Crane for the picture. My Air Compressor just has that plate covering a little foam block. The picture shows some sort of appendage bolted to were the plate is. It looks like all connections are closed to the atmosphere. Hmmm.... I'll look it up

The bottle is vented. In this view with the bottle removed, you can see the long tube, which vents to the atmosphere via an opening in the holder.

The TM calls for methanol, but I was using the store bought fluid before the pure methanol became available to me, something that the biodiesel project changed. :)

When I run out of the stuff shown here, I'll be using methanol.
The consumption is about 1 cup/1,000 miles, BTW.

Wow what the hell is all that stuff bolted to the air compressor? Mine just has a cover plate. I see a cylindrical housing with a large rubber hose attached going down. Where does the large hose go to?

I'll have to weld up and machine a small box that bolts to were the cover plate is and drill and tap it for the Alchohol line. Thanks again for all da info and pictures.

The cylindrical thing is the air intake for the compressor. it also has a filter in it that needs occasional attention. The rubber hose is part of a fording kit and is routed over to a nipple on the air cleaner housing. That mod can be done with 2 clamps and a piece of rubber hose and is advisable. Any water that gets to the compressor during planned or crisis fording will be very bad. I'm not aware of any ill-effects of leaving that hose in place.

Totally Dawsome. Thank you again. This is deff. next on my list of stuff. I will fabricate my own housing for a small K&N Filter and route its intake to the engine's air cleaner housing to replicate the stock setup.

The alcohol evaporator bottle is broken on the 8x8, but it shows how the vent tube is situated within.
It is teed into the compressor air intake line, which is permanently plumbed to the engine air intake. No long term problem should be expected, I have had the deuce compressor sucking air from the engine air filter canister for years.

It was only 10°F here this morning....
