Alternator died?

Here's another question about this. After starting the vehicle the battery switch is turned off (ie so you don't hear the air buzzer), how does this affect the battery??
It can be really bad for an alternator to have its load abruptly removed. The output voltage will spike, and that could take out the regulator.

Mine has had that done to it, when it was jumped at GL when its batteries were completely dead and open circuited. It didn't cause any harm, but I don't think I want to make that a standard practice.
