Am I on the right track with this engine build?

Actually I would be very interested in the 6.5, what does "detunned" mean? I had been highly considering purchasing a 6.5 off of GL, building it, putting my manual trans on it, and just swapping it out with the current setup in my 1009. Also, thanks for clearing up the multi fuel question. And yea, that rally sounds like a lot of fun, you can count me in.

Hey Matt,

Funny you should ask about what "detuned" means, To be honest it was a accident I bought it. The GL lot I bid on advertised them as 6.2L diesel engines. After the purchase I noticed a faded shop tag that said it was a 6.5L detuned HMMWV engine. As I understand it the evolution of military HMMWV engines was to bore the cylinders on a 6.2L making it a 6.5L detuned engine (this was what was in the early to mid 90's HMMWV) later they added a Turbo to the 6.5L and called it something else.

I know to put either version in a cucv you have to change a few thing like the exhaust manifold and a couple of other items but if you have the old 6.2 you can just swap the parts as the block is the same, I believe the glow plug system is different too like 12V instead of 24V but easy to swap. There are threads on this too.

Anyway that is a rather long winded way to say I still don't know what "detuned" means :D
I am still at work and I think I have some more info/specs at home that I downloaded by goggling the NSN that was on the shop tag.

If your still in middle of your build when you get back I can give you a ride to the event/camp-out/rally or you can take a civy vehicle if you need to.

Hmm, so basically it is a 6.2, but bored to 6.5? Hmm... My 1009 is actually good to go right now, and I wont be starting the build until block leave (end of july). Also they just pushed my fly home date back, to july 6th, so Im not gonna be going to town on my truck as soon as I get home. What kinda truck do you have? I would look through your profile but the internet is so slow its insane! lol, anyways, I gotta get to bed, we start packing connexes tomorrow... fun fun.

I currently have a tan 86 M1008, it had stenciling on the door that reads:
US ARMY
FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY

but a gate guard told me I could not have that on a POV so I changed to read
"UNOFFICIAL USE ONLY"

I'll post pictures later, I had to restore my laptop back to factory settings so I don't have them on the laptop anymore.

No worries dstang, had the DUI accident not happened right in front of me I would not have "vented" near as much.......that very well could have been my family in that wreck too had I not slowed down. You should count yourself lucky too because the if the guy that hit your truck did not see it, then he definitely would not have seen you had you been getting in or out of your truck at the same time. Anyways I am glad he did not try to ignore his debt to you.

Be sure to post pics once you repair/repaint it.

Lol, right on. My M1009 also is tan, and has the same markings on the door. Until I lifted it, and put the soft top on, they didn't even check me at the roy gate... lol... The markings are faded out, but no one ever said anything to me about them. Anywho, time to go pack the connex...

the 6.5 and 6.2 are the same but not moreless brothers 6.2 L had two piece rear main the 6.5L was a one piece rear main. block are different. the detuned comes from the Hp setting ons the pump Detuned was 144hp @3600 RPM 219 ft/lbs TQ while the 6.5NA was on the lines of 180-190 @3400 RPM the 6.2 blocks will have "6.2 GM" cast on the front right of the block on the ledge by the head. 6.5 blocks will have extra oil port galleys drilled and tappend where the turbo would mount and on the right front of the block.... for the banks style turbo setup. almost all parts are interchangable

I put my engine rebuild on here. But if you are going to turbo then you want a stud girdle. Just Google 6.2 "Stud girdle kit". The IP's are basically the same. It may need to be turned up a little. But the marine injectors may get enough fuel.

But the stud girdle kits bolts the main caps together. This strengthens the bottom end. The webbing tends to crack with even a small boost. So the stud girdle kit is not an option it is a requirement.:grd:

Would it be possible for you to check it and see if it is the 6.5 block? If so I would like to buy that off of you.
