Another EESS Box thread...

I have been a lurking, reading trying to learn from all of the wealth of information from here about m998s. Long story short, after replacing coolant hoses and thermostat because the temp gauge was not going down from about 220 degrees (it still does not), the glow plug light began to show the dreaded one second flash. During the thermostat replacement, I learned that previous owner (Uncle Sam), had previously replaced the thermostat and destroyed the thread for the lower bolt. I'm going to guess this was because of the threads being at a slight angle and the individual working on it failed to realize this. The coolant bridge was also replaced, and in the process, I disconnected the TSU and the temp gauge on the bridge. Of course, as a great lurker on this site I failed to disconnect the batteries first before disconnecting these sensors. I completed the work, plugged the sensors and was working great. A week later I got the one second gp light. After trying out a new set of batteries, installing the grounding harness and cleaning existing grounds, I decided to open up the EESS box to see if this was the culprit.

Below are pictures of the damage and the tag on the box. It did rain here for a couple of days which rarely occurs and I did not correlate the possible water damage to the EESS as the culprit. It had about 1/4'' water inside built up and this is a week later. Are the components on this box repairable by an electronics savvy individual? I'm thinking a circuit board repair man of sorts. Is it worth repairing? During my search on the site, I came across a linked gear report article on the PCB/EESS trouble shooting and mentioned that at one point Kascar had modify boxes but KDS had updated their design with the CR2699 which this seems to be. The second question, is this box a smart box? I know that the KDS S3 seems to be the best, but I would rather ask yet again the experienced folks here on what I should consider.

You have a KDS green box and you can go to the electrical section in the repairs section for the names of vendors who sell components.

Several of us have fixed various boxes and there are various posts.

Your box does not require glow plug temp sensor.

The sensor on the water crossover manifold is for the fan, not the temp gauge. The gauge sensor lives in the left front cylinder head behind the alternator. From the looks of the corrosion on the solenoid in your KDS box it's been getting wet for some time.

Thank you for the clarification. Yes it looks that way, I should have checked it when I got it but because it was working great I thought it was not getting wet. Also because it hardly rains here, I took its condition for granted. Lesson learned.

Not the first time this has happen. When these flakey box conditions present themselves I have joked "drain out the water" in past posts. Been there, done that.

Hummwv might have been a swimmer in its previous life. Was it a Marine truck or has fording features?

No, well there is no fording features on it and as far as previous history it's a mystery. I think that when it rained, water that found it's way through the top plug and now I am dealing with replacing it. It's part of the fun of owning a hmmwv I suppose.

Well, the attempt to repair and replace what seemed to be burned did not work. I think that in order to play it safe I am going to buy a set of glow plugs and this new s3 box. Now the question becomes, where is the best deal for these items?

If you buy a new box you should make sure it matches your glow plug sensor. You seem to have had a KDS Green, so you won't know what kind of sensor you had. A KDS green box does not use a glow plug sensor. You will therefor need to be safe and buy both.

BTW - What did you think was burnt out and what did you try to replace?

Yeah, I figured it's going to take an s3 box with matching sensor and glow plugs. My only concern is figuring out which version is the better version between Nartron and KDS boxes. Looking at the post here on the progression of the boxes, it looks like the KDS version seems better only because it uses relays instead the bog solenoid. I am no expert though and actual real world experience from other members would help. On the picture I posted, the black square components showed signs of being burned and a couple of transistors. I did not consider replacing the starter solenoid as I can hear it click.

There's no need to arbitrarily throw in a new set of glow plugs as long as yours check out resistancewise. Your just wasting money. (Hard to believe I even said this! It is a HMMWV after all!)

Are there any boxes available anywhere anymore? Last time I looked for one nobody had any available

All the boxes use a standard steel solinoid except the KDS S3 box

So... I found this where we all try to avoid. Is this the correct setup for the 6.2? It looks like it. I know it was mentioned that perhaps the glow plugs are good but I figured that if they are bound to go out might as well start with all three “new” Any thoughts would be appreciated.

working? id say $699 would be great price... but haven't had to buy one yet... Looks good with temp sender and bonus plugs
