Antenna, Radiating Element-What does it go to?

Hello gentlemen, I along with a few SS made a trip out to our local MV parts guy. I stumbled upon a stubby antenna of sorts. It tooks like the bottom portion of the AS-1729 antenna. I did a search and was unable to come up with anything. Here's the info on the antenna:

Murphyjunk describes it as a VHF HIGH BAND ANTENNA

What radio does this antenna go to? What antenna base does this mount to?

Sorry no pics, but like I said it looks like the bottom portion of the AS-1729 setup. It is NOT threaded to allow for a top antenna to be screwed into it.

It's an EPLRS radio antenna, mounts on the EPLRS antenna base. The radio passes location data, not voice on a UHF band, NOT VHF. It's pretty useless in the hobby world other than looking cool. You dont want to know what that antenna costs the taxpayers.

Thanks for the info Emmado. Now I too know what this thing is.

The base is AB-1284/VSO 1. The threaded portion is bigger than all of the other antennae, so only this one will fit.

Edit- I saw these on M1 Abrams turrets recently. Didn't want to post that until I had a poke around the internet and found that info freely available.

You guys are awesome! Thank you. I will definately mount this thing for the cool factor. My 109 is going to look like a truck with whiskers. Two MX-6707/AS-1729's, two AB-15's, two CB radio antenna's, Civilian Ham Radio Antenna's and now this stub. I'll probably fender mount this one so it doesn't need to be tied down.

At the last Georgia SS Rally there was ONE functional radio on the trail rides with all those trucks, and that one was a hand carried PRC-77.

To a ham op that's like building all your military vehicles to look great, but without engines!!

Huh? I've got an RT-246 and an R-442 in the cab. Along with a RT-524 and an R-442 in the van. Future installments include a GRC-106 and a multiband Yaesu in the van as well. To top it off a CB for the cab as well. I don't think I'm letting any antenna go to waste

Mike, You've been holding out on me! LOL
My first MOS in the Army was a 31C Single Channel Radio Operator(GRC 106), during my first tour I was reclassified to 31D Mobil Subscriber Systems Operator. Even after I re-enlisted to go 11B Infantryman I always found my way into Scouts or Long Range Surveillance Detachments due to my Commo background. I have played with some cool stuff Tac-Sat, HF, VHF, UHF, and EHF. I remember the old 524 series in Desert Storm we had to keep damp towels on them to keep them from over-heating in the high temps over there.

LOL, that's great Dale. You're my go to guy for radio troubleshooting. I've got the GRC-106 on my wishlist for now. I'm trying to get my 109 put back together for now. Right now I've got three R-442's (I'm working on getting 1 in operation), two RT-246's and one RT-524. I got stuck in a green radio phase. Before I knew it I had these bricks sitting in my garage. What's the maintenance like on the GRC-106's? Do they require a bunch of tubes? That's funny about the 524 overheating. I haven't had a chance to use the radios very much. There are hardly any HAM operators in the area.

I was pretty good at fabricating field expedient antennas too, Jungle 292's, Longwires, inverted V's, doublet GRA-50 stuff, bi-directional, uni-direction, and Omni.

I can help with troubleshooting and cabling/connections just keep in mind that I was an operator and antenna guy mainly, I was not a maintainer so as long as we don't have to crack them open I'll be glad to help.

Outstanding Dale. It's good to know I can count on someone who knows these radios. You'll have to give me a crash course on the operation of these radios at the next rally. I know these radios aren't the most efficient radios to have. But they do rank high on the cool factor. I guess I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to these MV's. Trying to keep them as USGI as possible.

Even if you DID have an EPLRS radio, you'd need the umteenbillion dollars worth of other EPLRS radios, computer systems, command nodes, and all that other good stuff in order to tell others your position... Not worth it in my book. '

Beltfed34 on ebay has those bases from time to time.
