Just wondering if anyone here on the forum has removed the silencer ring or did some sort of modification to where there turbo sounds like this Cummins 5.9 in the video below....and is the stock air intake on these trucks large enough to just simply modify the turbo greatly improve turbo sound?

Just skip to the 3:00 mark......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpCVOXGBeTc

It's the next thing I want to do....I really don't care for the loud straight pipe sound, but gosh do I love a loud turbo lol.

I'm sure it can be made to whistle. Best bet sound wise would be to find a Deuce with a C Turbo and install a muffler. It silences the bark but none of the whine and it's one of the things I miss about owning a Deuce.

That is the sound from the intake side. Probably has a K&N and an open air box. And most importantly, why. You will go deaf listening to that on a daily basis or on a long trip.

I only drive it once every few weeks. It does not have to be as loud as in the video, but I would like to be noticeably louder than it is.

I mean, I can't even hear it over my 1200 Watt sound system...LOLS

Take the muffler off. A turbocharger is considered an exhaust muffling device, at least here in Ca. Your truck will not sound like that though.

And, There is no other vehicle that sounds like a deuce with a C on it

Very true about the Deuces unique sound for sure.

A buddy of mine that has a 5 ton with the same engine took his muffler out and ran a straight pipe. The engine really overwhelms the sound of the turbo still yet...I mean the turbo is louder than what it was, but wayyyy to much engine noise compared to the turbo noise.

Install an open air filter element directly onto the turbo intake, that's the loudest intake noise you can make without swapping turbos.

Bring earplugs, tinnitus is a cruel mistris

Putting a deuce C turbo on a 8.3 would certainly give it a whistle, but consider you're replacing a more modern (90's design) turbo for an archaic design. It might give you the sound you want, but I'd be concerned with the reduction in performance you'd end up with.

The only other turbo that is close in performance(that screams a whistle), is a Garrett from a 2003 6 litre powerstroke. If your engine is all stock, up to the basic fuel adjustments, it should be just fine. The exhaust side has 10 vanes on the 03, as opposed to 13 on the 04 & up. Basically, you would buy a GT3782(like this one from a DT466E, http://www.amazon.com/International-Navistar-Turbo-Charger-Turbocharger/dp/B006UK1V34 ), then buy the turbine wheel & shaft for the 2003 stroker( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Powers...ash=item43d15304a2:g:CeEAAOSw8cNUSCsD&vxp=mtr ). They are a 59mm compressor, so it would actually be decent for performance.

Yep, the engine is all stock..Cummins 8.3 6cta. I'm surprised these parts that you mention are compliant with a Cummins 8.3, but that Garrett in that Powerstroke sounds easily as good as an old C turbo for sure.

I'm glad you posted that video of a Deuce C turbo on a CUCV. Gives me hope I may hear that familiar whistle again someday as I still have one of those!

Hey, glad I could post something to stir someone Else's imagination on a cool future project too. I just kept digging through the google search results before I found that video and had never seen that modification before.

What did you Say???? I Cant Hear you!!!!!..... My old 6.2 w/ a GM3 turbo and no intake to speak of did have a nice whistle over the growl and rattle of the 6.2, Seriously though my ears would ring for hours after a 2 hour ride at highway speeds. much less a roadtrip. After swapping in the Cummins and running it for the past 8 years and the 816 with turbo. I am seaking ways to quiet the ride. my hearing isnt getting any better and that persistant ringing in the ears is getting louder, but I continue to operate machinary, just consciously look for ear plugs now.
