On the oil bath bearing after a drum removal we would find a way to tip the axle both ways to finish loaded the trouff with oil both sides then top off diff. With our axles only get oil loaded when we lean to far and without the keyway seal a small amount gets in there. Over time it could be enough to wash bearings but most likley the seal is bad. If you look at the Diff. the fill plug is just about level with the bottom of the axle tube and key way on top. So the end of the housing might carrie a little oil when we run the truck but it would never be full as it would run back to the Diff. If one was to never lean or take a curve at speed enough to sling the oil out there to the end of the axle then one might not ever have a problem with oil intrusion because of the keyway. Bottom line seal the key way and hope the seal never fails in my .02
