Bearing is stuck

I was under the impression that the inner wheel bearing would just slide on, but for some reason it hung up. I tried hitting around the bearing with a hammer, but now it's just stuck even more. It will not budge in either direction. Should the bearing require force for installation or is it supposed slide on?

You sure? I tried the other bearing and it would hang up right after the threads.

Use a puller! To get it off should slide right on maybe with a tap or 2. Something is not right.

You have to push gently and evenly from each side for it to slide right on. It's a very tight fit so if it's off at all it hangs up. Never hit them with a hammer! I found a few that were pretty dented up from someone beating them into place. The same goes for taking them off. Just give it even pressure on each side and it will slide right off.

They are not interchangeable.

The inner bearing is a 3994, the outer bearing is a 392.

You may have to tap it into position(on the inner race with a brass punch or a sleeve that will use the full inner race surface). It should be a snug fit. Get it cocked, and it will bind.

I have to question, are you following the TM procedure? I'm concerned about proper preload.


You haven't updated your last few threads. Should we assume you've solved all those issues?

I think so ? Lol I had the same problem but I didn't hammer mine on it just wouldn't go over the lip I just tried the other one and it slid right on no problem

All the info you need to perform the tasks you are doing, is documented in those books. They can be read by an idiot that has no experience at all, and allow that idiot to perform a repair procedure CORRECTLY!


Seriously, all the repairs you've been doing lately, need to be done correctly, or you've wasted your time and possibly are going to endanger yourself and the general public.

What about adjusting your brakes properly? What about bleeding your brake system properly,Torque the spindle nuts correctly? Etc...

I even question/have doubt on the grease you used.

I used just plain old trumpet grease worked fine ? What type was ment to be used ?

Trumpet grease only works "up and down" with air flowing around it.


Wheel bearings need grease that goes round and round without getting dizzy.

Oh, also, the TM tells you where to position the wire clamps for your new boots. If they are incorrectly positioned, they will either fall off or damage your new boots. Did you know that?

Granted it does not give torque specs, but you speak to me as if I'm entirely incapable or rather too simple minded to preform this task. I very pleased to hear you are using Banshee's very helpful thread! I assumed you were just winging it, for that I say sorry, I was wrong.

I don't mean to come off as condescending(I hear that occasionally). I just put the facts out there.

So, might I suggest(once again), you reference the TMs, as well as follow the helpful threads on SS. That way you assure yourself, that your doing it correctly.

Most importantly, it sounds like this site is working well for you(and many others).

The thing about an idiot being able to follow the TM's is true. Just because they are designed for the lowest possible skill/intelligence level, does not discount their usefulness or exactness. If no one ever read them, they would not be updated umpteen times.

Zeiss, I'm glad that no one has piped up with bad advice yet for you, such as bang it on with a sledge and oversized pipe, and get-r-done. No one here wants you to have a personal road disaster, and they don't want their advice to weigh on their conscience.

Fixing these trucks is part of the hobby--it shouldn't cause suffering in solitude.

I recommend you pull the bearing back off, clean it up and inspect for damage from the hammer. And as Doghead said, verify that the grease you're using is correct for your application. And on behalf of the others, thank you Zeiss for asking others before taking a chance on possibly sabotaging a repair. It shows personal responsibility and pride in your vehicle.
