At WPAFB Andrew would not let people preview without an escort. He also would not let me drive my pickup truck into the back lot lest I pick something up with that wasn't mine. I wasn't offended, actually I was kind of glad they do it there. There is a better chance of my stuff being there when I pick it up.

Locks don't really help. I bought a hydraulic trailer that had six tool boxes full of tools and each box had a padlock. When I picked it up, every padlock was pried off and most of the tools were gone.

One thought with doing a preview after you win the auction. If your EUC does not clear, then you just bought a lock for someone else. Since it technically is not your truck until that clears.

I locked the back of my M109 (with site manager's permission) and I wrapped the chain from the chocks around the spare and locked that up as well. When I returned with my paid in full invoice the locks were cut and the chocks were gone. There was so much crap in the back that I have no idea if the took anything. Ladder was still there though.

Sometimes a base is so safe - it's a great place to steal. I leave my keys in my car on the days I drive to work because this base is "safe". Yet when they did the last inventory here there were enough missing computer items to get NCIS attention.

When I post previewed my truck in Barstow there was a semi picking up a 5 ton. After it was tied down (didn't see how they loaded it - truck looked to be in sad shape), the truck driver started checking out another 5 ton very closely. Maybe he was checking it out because it was his next pick up, maybe he was looking to see what was there. Once he saw me watching him from the cab of my M109 he suddenly closed everything up and got in his semi and drove away.

While the site manager only allowed me to go to my truck and take pics, etc, there was a group of three guys who appeared to be Barstow regulars wandering around unescorted. When they saw me locking my truck up they said that was a pretty good idea.

Theft will always be a problem with GL. Anything they put in place to try and stop it will only end up costing us more in the long run. If they hire more employees and put in cameras, dogs and razor wire, who pays for it? Maybe that buyers premium goes up to 20%.

I don't know what the answer is - hopefully some of these theives get what's coming to them someday - via karma or the legal system.

Camp Dodge was rough on me too.

I lost all the radio equipment off mine. Obviously didn't have a radio, but everything else was there in the picture(s) when I finally got my EUC all of it except the mast and mount were gone. The Sgt. helping us load just shrugged his shoulders.

He was a nice guy (helped push start my truck) but it wasn't his problem so he didn't care.
Thieves at Camp Dodge don't seem to be anyone's problem.... except ours.

That's what I love about Jackson- Tim watches everyone like a hawk. I have never had anything missing out of any truck bought there.

I got one M109 out of Lejeune. Never again. Luckly I drove the m35 up in case we had to tow it. Good thing we did. Someone stole the new batteries, all the tools out of the box under the cab, the ladder, and the #1 injector cap and return lines. (rendering it un-driveable) But, luckly, they left the brand new soft top folded up on the passenger seat.

And yes, I had previewed the truck.

It's a rotten shame anyone would do that, especially if they are on this forum.

No promises from GL

Previewing a M109 with ladder, asked if ladder went with truck? Reply was that he could not promise that because the GL stuff was used as spare parts depot by local Army units!

GL rep. at Camp Robinson, AR. told me that the soldiers have free reign to come and take any equipment and parts off the auction trucks at anytime.

Saving us tax dollars on one hand and ripping off paying customers with other!

Another complaint about method of surplus auctions........................

Unfortunately Sgt. Birkenholtz is "tasked" with helping guys get their stuff on top of his actual job in the military. Thats why they changed it to pick up by appointment or on Fridays only as he had people in there all the time getting stuff. GL has no onsite presence, they are out of Illinois for Camp Dodge. The GL guys only go over when needed.

I called Ft. Riley and asked them if I could put a chain around my truck's cab. They said yes and I did. It is so annoying that people won't respect another's property.

Are you still in euc limbo? I am going out to Riley next week to PU my M1009 and trailer. I give your truck the once over. Guess I will now have to take bolt cutters!!!

Thanks, MW. The passenger side bug eye mirror is broken. Other than that it was fine as of three or so weeks ago. The rear end of the tarp should still be rolled up. The tarp, bows and troop seats were complete also. If you wouldn't mind taking a look at it I'd sure appreciate it. I am in still in EUC limbo. Hopefully not for much longer.

Hi Stagg. How's Ohio?

Since my deuce has the C turbo, I am thinking of naming it "Screaming Meemie" after the German rockets in WWII. They made a very shrill screech.

Every truck I have previewed at Ft Riley has always had the locks cut and the boxes empty. Every truck, every time. The trucks are all intermingled (is that a word?) with DRMO FMS freeze trucks and I see guys in uniform going thru the trucks just like we do when doing a preview. I've seen the vice gone off the front of wrecker with the nuts and bolts left sitting loose right there on the bumper.

Today I went out there and they no longer let you drive a POV out there unless your doing a pick-up. Man that walk sucks.

I wondered what the deal was with that chain around the cab.

There were some trucks that came up for auction after mine that didn't have gauges. I didn't want mine to disappear. I also made a sign that says "Sold, Do Not Tamper." I laminated it and put it on the inside on the windshield. I hope people will respect that.

Yep, people seem willing to go through a lot of trouble to steal stuff. One cable taken from my truck needed the ends dismantled to pass it through the cab wall.... I know because I have to do the opposite to get one back in:roll:

As for Ohio, FlyingVan, its fine. However, I do prefer the rolling hills of Kansas.

Here's my take on the subject...ya just can't stop a thief if ya ain't standing right there watching....and then he just might have his arm around your shoulder like your best buddy and be pissing on your leg at the same time.:deadhorse:

I had a tarp stolen off a deuce at an un-named GL site...had pics etc from the sale. The GL feller was embarrased and apologized...and even offered another tarp of another truck...that had also been sold. I said that wouldn't be right...and he said thank you.

It is what is what it is...and you get what you get...and I don't see it changing any time soon. In my tarp case...one of three things happened:

1.. A GL employee ripped it off, or let it happen....I don't believe that is the case.

2.. A GANG (GA National Guard) unit needed it...so that's OK with me....sorta.

3.. Some scumbag buyer stole it and knew better. In that case...I hope he is inflicted with the fleas of a thousand camels in his arm pits and groin area...
THEN....I hope he gets radiation exposure from the radium gauges on the truck he stole the tarp from...
THEN....I hope he gets bitten by a Pit Bull with Aids, Herpes, Avion Flu and anything else that can easly transferred:jumpin:
THEN...after all that has worn him down...I hope he tries to "Poke the Bear" again!!

OH...and I hope he needs a root canal...or 32 from the dentist:wink:

Well, I submitted a claim for what I think a ladder will cost plus shipping, and I just received an email with the claim approved. Took about 16 days after I submitted the claim. Now, if only I can get that paid in full notice.
