I think it would be easier to armor for small arms fire with kevlar cloth and roll on bed coating then a thin steel overlay sandwich for metal componenets. Sandwiching 1/4" lexan with mesh screen and clear silicone may protect against small arms also for glass. Not that I have tried any of this.

I too would rather up armor a deuce. It's a great vehicle to add armor to. That way you wouldn't have to worry about weight as much.

This was what I was thinking as well. The humvee up armor kit added anywhere from 1000 to 4000 pounds depending on the level. I don't think the 6.2 diesel could handle much REAL armor and still move.

Unless you are planning on robbing a bank, why bother?

Thats not a fair thing to say. Ever live in L.A.? How about Vegas?

I use to armor our ATM service trucks. Its easy to do and not all together to expensive or heavy. Mind you its not a FULL ON ARMOR Job but enough to get you out of an area / kill zone hopefully with no holes in you. There are allot of good products. We are pretty much talking about very small arms fire. No heavy caliber rifles. Mainly handgun rounds. But you can up armor and get pretty decent rifle fire protection too. All depends on how much time and money you want to spend. Polycarbonet inserts inside your vehicle will keep it looking stock from the outside. Some tinting and no one will know. 1/8 armor plate on the doors will go along way to protect you. Kevlar over that or before it will also add alott of protection. I prefer the kevla on the inside (of vehicle after armor) This will help catch any spawling and or really slow down anthing that gets through the armor.

1) Move to a safer area.
2) Paint truck to look civilian.

Could conversations like this be the reason that some states wish to outlaw/remove the right to civvy MV ownership?

Some people need a "Bugout" vehicle that will enable them to get past thugs and gang bangers to get to where they should have been to begin with. But we all have to make a living and not live in a bunker since thats not really living. Although bugging out to a bunker would be your 2nd best option and the most viable one for us unwashed masses. Most of us dont work for the "Man" who has multi Million/Billion dollar Installations/bunkers that will be waiting with hot food and hot coffee (and im sure some will have hot women just ask Harry Reid) with an armed escort and a small armed force to protect it. We might be lucky to have a remote cabin off the grid in the woods beyond the realm of city slickers and thugs. If so then you will need a vehicle to safely get you and your loved ones there. Being prepared for anything will help you get thyere in one peice.

NO!

Its the Left winged progressives / liberals who hate our Military and ANYTHING that reminds them of it. Those are the people that want to do away with Civilian Military Vehicle Ownership. You will also find these are the same people who think we should NOT be "allowed" to own a gun. These people just dont like us having Rights like those. That pesky Right just keeps getting in the way of "there" progress. Also how many CUCVs have you EVER seen lightly armored? None. And your around them a **** of allot more than those people. So If you havent seen any then how could that possibly be "THE" reason why they would want to do away with MVs? Your question therefore is not logical. I had a Armored vehicle and had nothing but good relations with my Sherrifs dept. They wanted to use it for high risk warrents. Other than that positive response there were no negative responses to owning it. BUT I live in the most remote town in the Continental U.S.. In Las Vegas some local council members (who moved from CA) had issues with a Ferret AV. They didnt like how it looked. They tried all kinds of ordinances against him but he beat them since his vehicle was street legal and registered. Its people ignorance and there Progressive Liberal agenda we are batteling not to mention there hate for our Military. Therefore its these types of elected officials and there idiology and there beliefs that hurt our Ownership of MVs not to mention our Rights as Americans. Thats why you need to vote people like this out of office and stay dilegent to who you vote for.

Chain mail was primarily developed to stop spears, arrows, knives etc. The rings 'caught' the tip of the weapon, and prevented it from going through, by dissipating energy as the mail was placed under tension-stretching. I think ballistic projectiles are a different threat, with a lot more energy.

I like the idea of a bobbed deuce, with armor plate like the White scout car of WWII. All flat sections, easy to make and attach. A shortened deuce would take up less space, and could handle the 1/4" armor plate weight.

In response to Tanner...we could be talking about any vehicle not necessarily a military vehicle. Not to mention we still have freedom of speech, and a forum is a place to discuss IDEAS that may or may not come to fruition. Either way how would armoring your vehicle be dangerous to anyone?
Seems to me you would only be trying to protect yourself and your loved ones. I guess in the end I see it this way... I live in a safe area BUT I still lock my doors and turn on the alarm.....DO YOU?

Stimpy -

Obviously, in a free speech forum, your right to speak freely is greater than my right? :?

I'm not against your right to own an MV, armored or otherwise. Armor-away, mon frere!

To the Liberal perception, MV ownership isn't logical - they ask 'why do you need such a vehicle?' I tell them, 'it isn't need, it is desire'.

Next relevant discussion?

If you want to know why you do not live near Mexico. The best vehicles to armor are ones that do not look armored. The weak point in the M1009 is all the glass. You can replace it but it cost more to armor glass than non glass because of the lack of choices. Personally I say the best defense is a good offense. Get a concealed hand gun license if you are worried and armor your vehicle. That way if they catch you they have to deal with you. Like catching a tiger by the tail.

if option a (run away) fails and option B (neutralize threat) fails then option C (shielding) oh wait... if we don't have armor then that's not an option.... i personally like options. I just don't have the money or means to have an option C at the moment.

Biggest prob i see with the CUCV is that it's slow, can't hold a lot of weight, tons of glass... the list goes on. I don't really think a deuce is all that great either.

I think i'd start with a TANK!!! or maybe an old Dozer... but i think i saw that on wildest police videos once so people have negative conotations.

Also... for the record no one has free speach on this board. It's owned and operated and has rules and standards. all of this can be spun in a way that makes our hobby look bad just like all of it can be spun to make our hobby look great. i think we should try to make it a little more difficult.

There are many better platforms for this type of vehicle. Armored, comfortable, faster, more maneuverable etc. start with a more modern SUV with a good frame, less glass, stronger engine.

Also this has been discussed in excess many times over. The EMP stuff the armor stuff etc. Its either still there and searchable or been deleted for one reason or another. I totally support armor and personal defense of self, family etc.

Rock on gents.:beer::deadhorse::deadhorse::beer::deadhorse::beer:

My response to Tanner wasn't to P/O anyone. It was just saying that I would rather prepare and hope I don't need it. I agree we have certain standard required on this forum and that is why I have not started the political rant. If the SHTF Tanner head north and we can hide out together

Hey WARWAG,
you mention that you used to up-armor ATM trucks, do you have a good source for factory-replacement ballistic glass and/or kevlar mat? I've done a google search but with mixed results.

PS Did you get your handle from the Deathlands novels?
