Brake and Bumper Crash Test....

First and foremost; everyone walked away!

So last week I adjusted my front brakes, today I adjusted my rear brakes. It's amazing how much better the truck stops, I would venture to say it stops great!

And I got to test the brakes this evening!

As I was driving the bobbed Deuce home from dinner it started to hail, no rain just lots of 1" and smaller hail (dented the wife's Isuzu Trooper a bit, she's cranky!).

I'm following the wife down a city street, doing about 20 mph, and a guy in a van pulls out right in front of me!

I slam on the brakes and blast the horn right as the front of his van makes "contact" with my passenger side bumper. He continues to move forward across my truck until his drivers door is right in the middle of my front bumper and I can see his face peering over my hood and looking at me as I shove him sideways for 10' or so.

Although I don't have pictures of his van, "sardine can" is a good description and I'm not sure his drivers door will ever open again.

I get out and as I'm getting pummeled by hail, check of the other driver. He said he hit the brakes but it wouldn't stop, he may have been sliding on hailstones (the ground was mostly white by then).

I told him I was insured and asked if he was, he said yes. Now you should never judge anyone by the way they look (you should see me on shop days), but based on the van (it was pretty rough) and the driver, his insurance status may have been questionable.

The guy tells me he'd prefer not to report the accident and after surveying my damage told him that was ok with me, and he went on his merry way.

I did call 911 and reported the accident, I didn't want anyone to claim "hit and run". For the report the operator asked what I was driving and I responded "an M35A2". The guy responds "a Deuce? It did't scratch it or anything, right?"

I responded with "I've suffered some paint loss."

The operator, Army, finished the report and was glad the Deuce was ok.

The bumper flexed enough to touch the fender but mostly came back into place, a little buckle at the first bolts.

And as I said before, the guys van... "sardine can".

Damage pictures attached.

I'm glad you both are well. I slid through an intersection with my old van's brakes locked before. I was going the speed limit and the road was wet. I think there was oil on the road. The '88 E-250 slid smoothly like my foot wasn't on the brakes at all.

It's bad feeling to do everything right and still not stop. Glad your deuce is ok.

Glad you are ok.

I had a front bumper bent just like that once, using a mini excavator I was able to bend it back almost perfect.

honestly, I'd probably look for a take-off bumper to get fixed up... a bow in the metal like that is now a weak point and may crack or completely break off in the even of another whoopsiedoodle.
