Buying my first "big" truck - M925A0...

Hello All,

Been a while since I have posted...

Anyways, buying a 1986 M925A0 (or as CSM Davis told me M925 "basic" or M925A0 - thanks Jeff!) in IN and driving it back to TN while flat towing my 1986 M1009 CUCV behind it - about 440 miles each way.

Leaving early morning, so not much time to search 5 ton recovery efforts.

Outside of the usual items to bring for break-downs, are there any "gotchas" in driving this 5 ton home? I am not versed in the M939 series cargo trucks like I am on CUCVs.

Selller owned it for 5 years and used it on a farm to transport water. He said no issues and it is road worthy...

Thanks in advance for any tips.

MikeV

Take plenty of spare tires. I65 in ky and in is brutal. Anywhere around indy is bad. Even g177s will cry on that road.
Had I known it could have hitched a ride to Tennessee cheap as I came thru there empty today.

Congrats! Picking up my 925(a2) from states away was the first thing I drove, out of open heart surgery. Exciting time for you, welcome to the club.

Does this truck have ABS? If not leave double the room you would between yourself and the vehicle you are following. You say first big truck? Experienced with air brakes? Keep your speed down. Not trying to freak you out, just approach the whole thing with a bunch of respect.

That's an M925A0. Trivial difference. Looks decent.

Drop the driveshaft on the M1009. Got lights?
Yeah M925 basic only differences are 14.00x20 vs 11.00x20 and fender mounts to clear the super singles. Definitely drop the rear driveshaft and make sure the front hubs are unlocked, and for that distance I might drop the front.

Fine looking truck, post up the journey home with pictures. (rather than disconnect everything, why not put the M1009 in the back?).

In case you break down you have no way to get help or off the road

Got it home...

Dam, I attached these photos and they displaced everything I typed before adding these photos (even after I did a "copy" before adding these attachments)... I'll retype later - got to finish a timing belt job on my POV...
