Checking and adjusting the balance on the transfer case gearing, both takeout and NOS from original packaging.

As well as being exceptionally rare, the transfer cases are also known for their noise, and when you see just how much the gears are out of balance, you can have a better understanding as to where at least some of the noise comes from. If you've ever had the pleasure of trying to find one of these cases, you know how important taking care of them is.

After checking 10 different gears, I think it's safe to assume that they never made one that was reasonably balanced...and considering I have seen loose bearing locations in the case during overhaul, it's pretty obvious that vibration would have been a major contributor.

Coming to the conversation late, but where in the sequence of production would this kind of eccentricity be introduced? The only place I can think is when the centre hole was bored.
That would be my understanding as well. Evidently some were better than others but of the many CG gearboxes I have worked on, I have seen no evidence that balancing had ever taken place.
