Glad to hear that you got your gensets working and in the shape they were when you purchased them that's pretty messed up that someone actually unbolted parts from your gensets. A missing wheel chock or lug wrench isn't nothing really but to literally unholy parts takes some cahoonas.

The only thing I would worry about with stirring up alot of **** is that the government might just say ok if you want to bitch about our go sites then we'll just stop all GL surplus auctions and we'll just scrap everything and I definately wouldn't put the government past saying something like that.

Does anybody have any personal experiences with theft at any of the Ohio sites (Wright Patterson, Columbus, or Lockbourne) while waiting for an EUC? Just curious.

The same thing happened to me to a lesser degree. Somebody swiped a shackle from the front of the M35A2 I won. I previewed a bunch of gensets a couple of months ago that all looked in good shape except they were all missing the same easily removable parts, dip stick, oil cap, fuel cap. I,m not saying nothing and I didn,t follow the auction but it almost looked like parts were removed to discourage bidders. I suppose its hard for GL to police what the public does.

John - Good to hear from you, and I hope all is well with you in W. Texas. I'll be in Ft. Worth, for a few days, starting Thursday, for a reunion of my old VN combat squadron - good times, great memories! Not close to San Angelo, but in the same state, anyway!

The camaraderie shared by SS is cut from the same cloth as we in my squadron, and later, in the prisons of NVN experienced. Common interests, common goals, and helping the other guy to make it through his problems, however bad they might be. It at least provides some balance to the selfish actions of folks who really are the reason we have to discuss such things as theft from equipment on GL sites, anyway!

Thanks, again, Steel Soldiers!

You may be correct with your conclusion regarding the reasons behind thievery of parts at GL sites but, does it really matter! Whatever the reasons, the folks doing it are flat out WRONG! Life can't be worth much to those who can't, or won't, be straight up in dealing with the rest of us. You only have to steal, or lie, ONCE to be accurately described as a thief or liar. My honor is worth more to me, than to take that chance!

I suppose some people see the GL compounds as their own, personal, free junkyards - or perhaps they believe themselves to be "entitled"! Then, there are those like Bill Clinton, who used to answer the question, "Why did you do that?", with, "Because I could!"

That's not going to happen and, if it were to happen, most of us don't handle intimidation well. Govt. surplus items have been available at one place or another, for many years. They are a good thing for customers, and they are good for the govt. As with all govt. interactions, it is easier for them to say, "NO!", than to attempt to solve the problem, but if we become the burr under the saddle, eventually they will have to respond. Never forget, it is all about money and politics!

I'm only 73, so I may not qualify for the same "back in the day" of which you speak! I was, in fact, made such an offer, when I picked my gensets up, several months ago. Told that the parts offered had not yet been photographed and prepared for auction, I agreed to take them, after my initial protests. The units I had won, however, were shown in auction photos as being complete, and a friend had pre-inspected them and found them complete, as advertised! Consequently, it appeared that I wasn't about to get what I had bid on and won - not quite the same as bidding on an item, knowing that certain parts are missing. I had bid nearly twice the going price, just because those gensets WERE complete, and very low time! We're looking, here, at not just cannibalization, but false advertising by GL!

Not sure where the comment about "Investigations Division" comes from, but I have participated in several GL auctions since this one - investigate away - I have nothing to hide!

If you search BBB in arizona, you will find a rating for GL under them, out of the 35 responses, 33 (?) were for poor customer service. Bad advertising, ect., Google it and find out for yourself.

As others here have suggested, alway bid low. Get there first, so you can cannibilize what someone else took off. . My 5 ton wrecker was missing so much.. I was the last to pick mine up.

That investigation thing, is a little friendly reminder from my New Friend at GL.
when you get this written in a Email from GL, It means they like you, I mean really like you
. I write about him ever chance i get... Funny, he hangs up on me. :deadhorse:

I have a GL account but i have not bought anything from them yet. This thread really make me question making any purchases from these people.

I know your not new to the hobby. But in your posts you come across and one of those that would do just what you said. You buy a truck/trailer or what ever and if stuff was missing you would get GL to just take it off another lot and give it to you, or wander around on your own and "canibilize" what ever you needed. Whether this was last week or 5 years ago its still wrong. Many, many members here have been victoms of this type of behavior.

Its because of this that I can no longer go out to my local GL lot and look over as many items as I want. I now have to have an escort and they only allow one lot preview per appoint.

Dont let it scare you. All you have to do is do your homework. Preview if possible (take a camera and take pics of the lots so you know whats there), save the GL photos and take them with you when you go to pick it up, if stuff is missing file a claim for the missing items or do not sign for the lot and get your money refunded. Thats what the camera and GL photos are for, so you can dispute what was actually in the lot.

At lakehurst in 03? Nothing like driving my avatar into the base, with a camera, and 4 nice gentlemen with 50 round clips telling me I cant own a truck with US army on it. Something about the camera that really set em off...

IF you call friends here, ones that would give advice of taking a camera onto a secure military installation, advice? WOW>>>>..:deadhorse:
