Cleaning Fuse Box Pins

I took the fuse box apart on my M1008 to clean the connections. The photos show that both the passenger compartment section and engine compartment section have what appears to be some tar-type substance everywhere. Is this normal? I assume it
should be removed; what is the best way?

I believe that is what is left of the factory dielectric grease. It can be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner and a brush. Be sure to apply fresh dielectric grease when putting it back together!

yep that's the ticket, mine on engine side was bad, totally hosed it with electric cleaner spray and re-applied di-electric grease. Wear gloves and glasses that spray cleaner is nasty stuff!
