I have a 1971 multifuel and what is the best way for cold weather starting? Do you use the on-board assist, block heater, tank heater or ether? Every diesel semi driver I know warned me about popping heads and gaskets with ether. What is safe?

I tried starting mine today, temp is around 34(coldest its been here in a while) she usually starts with the push of the button, but today she started then stalled, twice, before I climbed up and had to hit the gas pedal as it started to keep it alive, then she finally started idling. Should i have used the block heater, or is there something maybe wrong? when its warm theres never any problems
