convert mep-018a to 12 volt starting system

I am considering converting the starting system on my generator to 12 volt. Has anyone done this? I'm thinking that rewinding the starter for 12v, swapping the solenoid for a 12v solenoid and converting the battery charging regulator to 12v is all that will be required. Opinions? 1st hand knowledge?

You may have to do a little digging on this one but I think it's a Mazda 939 starter that bolts in with minor nose work. Might be best to use "military standard" starter to locate the info. Not much chat about the mil standard engines lately. FYI the 4A032, 2A042 and 4A084 all use the same starter!
