Looking for correct backspacing for new steel wheels to mount 40s on an 1986 1028 CUCV. Had 12 Bolt Hummer Bead locks recentered at 3.5 inches by Trail Worthy Fab. Looking to get new rims.

If the rims you have work, why not just go with that backspacing?

There is no right answer, the higher backspacing will keep the steering geometry working correctly and minimize tire rub on the fenders but the less backspacing will push the tire out for track width and keep them away from hitting the leafsprings. It's always a compromise with a stock axle.
