If you remove the rotation stops, the boom will swing straight forward. Then you just lift yourself up...

Bricks, wait for the pics...

Another option on making a spreader beam is to just use a piece of pipe or beam with attachment points on the ends with no attachment in the middle for the hoist hook. In this setup you use additional rigging to go from the beam to the hook, all the beam does is keep the rigging separated.

The advantage to this setup is that it can be much lighter to lift a given weight because the beam isn't holding the whole weight and the beam is in compression. The disadvantage is that it takes more rigging and headroom.

Here's a crude drawing.

Whiffle tree etc.

Are there any detailed pics on here of that attachment you have?
There are other posts showing this setup. I think it was refered to as Holmes gear and was typical civi gear prior to the 'rotator' trucks and underlifts.

Ironically, it is also the direction the military has gone with the MTVR and HEMTT 984. Putting the pivot of the 'pull' in the same plane as the 'lift' pivot. It elliminates the 'under steer' effect you get when suspended towing with a standard 'towbar' - std issue for med wreckers up to and inc 936. see also pics in post #31 of first thread **

Hope this helps...
