CUCV Bumper Markings

Hello to all:

I am stenciling bumper numbers on my M1009. It is painted in 3 color woodland.

I see that the markings have a rectangular base. Is this color flat white, medium yellow or desert tan?

Are the markings in 3" or 2" stencil?

I also see the markings on the tailgate instead of the bumper on some M1009. If I go with 3" my marking is 22" long and doesn't fit.

The company markings and vehicle markings that I am using will be similar to these off a current humvee.

Desert tan and 2". Block font not stencil like pictured. Typically they use vinyl transfer letters.

You can zoom in and see the bumper number on my CUCV that it had when I first got it. 128TH MP CO... looks like 1" and black. That's how the Alabama National Guard did their bumper numbers in the mid-90s.

I think that the bumper markings can sometimes be different.

The M1008 I had, they looked like this

It is supposed to fit inside of a three inch circle (imaginary).

Every unit I was in used 2” brass stencils, that’s what we had on hand. I didn’t know they were supposed to be a different font until last month when doing research on here and other sites after acquiring my M1009.

8. NATIONAL SYMBOL.
a. The national symbol is a 5-point star in
contrasting lusterless black 37030 or green 383 (34094)
in a size that fits inside a 3 inch diameter circle. It will be
applied to all tactical and combat vehicles and
appropriate equipment in CONUS and overseas. The
symbol will be applied to vehicles and equipment only
when withdrawn for issue to US Army units. It will not be
applied to ambulance or other medical service vehicles
affected by international agreement concerning such.

b. The star will be applied to front and rear of
vehicles/equipment as specified in Appendix C. On the
rear of wheeled vehicles, the star may be centered on
the tailgate, Figure 2.

For sure the Army mostly used stencils like you say, but the FONT on the stencil needs to be “block” (like on the pictured CUCVs) and not “stencil” (like is pictured on the HMMWV).
