I have a 1986 M1009. Haven't done any mods to the 24V electrical system.
I have trouble starting when the temp is below 50 F.
If I start with accelerator half-depressed as recommended, it will sputter, puff white smoke and die. If I start without pressing the accelerator at all it will sputter for like 15 seconds and then I can give it some gas and it starts running right. But sometimes it will just die. When that happens, I need to crank it for at least 10 seconds, then wait, reheat the glow plugs, and after I crank again it will start but sputter first with a lot of white smoke.
I have searched the forums for similar symptoms but could not find anything close.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

There are way to find the bad ones if you don't want to replace them all. I believe those methods are found in the -20 TM (not sure though). If you don't replace all of them I would replace the bad ones with the 60G AC Delco glow plugs, which I think are the closest I think to OEM (if they are not OEM). If you just want to replace all of them and be done with it, some recommend the 80034 Bosch glow plugs, which are supposed to be higher performance.
