CUCV DH478 Toro-Flow swap

Im playing with the idea of putting a 1967 478 GM Toro-Flow engine out of a gmc 6000 dump truck into a cucv. has anyone ever done this? is there any place to get parts for that engine?

i cant seem to find any info on those big block v6 diesels. i have 3 of them laying around here, but i need a clutch disk and a starter to get one to start.

Help is much appreciated.

I believe they are loosely based off the 305-478 gas engines. Sounds interesting enough. I would venture to say that 1200# or better might require spring work in the front.

Parts might be a big problem. That engine wasn't in production that long. It would be interesting to see it in a CUCV though !

Head gaskets are virtually unobtainable. I took an old one and drew up an ACAD drawing with the idea of having a shop CAD/CAM cut them out of soft copper, but have not done it. We found ours to be very fuel thrifty with good power. Be very careful if you ever use ether because it will blow the head gaskets if you make a mistake and over-do it. We have one in a GMC truck and one in a Uni-Harvester. The Massey Ferguson in the pictures has been adapted by my son and I to have a GMC gas 478 V-6 in it. It originally had a Waukesha inline 6 gas motor. Took a bit of machine work! These engines have really great torque and lugging power throughout the power band. We also have a Cletrac BD dozer converted to a wheel tractor with a 305 V-6 in it and an older Payloader with a 305 V-6 conversion we did. I should have mentioned, go to 6066gmcclub.com to find a site with many articles and threads of discussion about the V-6 gas and diesel engines. You will probably find discussion there with members who have done the conversions like you want to.

Can't see your picture but everything I can find says they were converted gasser GMC motors.
Okay got the scan to come up so I could read the article and this one says they aren't the same.
So let's look at a few things, we know the heads will be different but from what I am reading from guys rebuilding them for themselves that blocks and bellhousings and maybe even cranks are swapping so what the OP is looking for a starter and clutch should swap.

I went to the site 6066gmcclub.com and all I could find is that maybe the crankshaft will fit. I appears the block is different. According to the article, not much fits between the engines. I worked on these engines in the 70's. I don't remember the head gasket problems, but I do remember the injection pump having problems. In many respects they are like the Multifuel engine. Instead of the PSB pump it used the PSJ pump. Very similar in design. Head gasket problems just like the Multifuel also. Also cooling problems. That's why they did so well in boat applications due to the extra cooling those engines get.
Still all in all a very interesting engine.

It has been done, my dad put one on a 1973 chevy 3/4 ton in 1978. Truck had 900.20 on front and big floats on rear. As a child we took this truck with the biggest slide in camper all the way to California pulling our modified 4x4 pulling truck on trailer. It sent me on a path with these trucks my whole life eventually with me building this.720160704_180144.jpg hence my name rockwellc60.

Nice truck, and cute girls. I read that a lot of people repurposed the ToroFlows into 3/4 and 1 ton trucks in the 70's . They seemed to live a good long life in that application.

It seems like it has ample power to pull the bus around and has that unique sound. Our water-pump cover has a wee crack in it so if you don't use those motors up we're hoping to keep this bus running.

We haven't found a lot of spare parts.

That was my original point about spare parts. Since the Toro-Flow engine is not the same as the gasser engine.
