CUCV mileage question

So my odometer is reading at about 13,700 miles. Problem is I don't know if this is actually 13,700 miles or 113,700 miles. The previous owner stated that the mileage should be 13,700 miles, but I really don't have anything to back this up other than the previous title. Either way, the truck needs servicing within the next 300-1,300 miles. I've heard that once the odometer rolls over, the first two digits on the left won't line up evenly. Is this true? I also checked the brake and gas pedals for wear. The gas pedal is plastic, looks to be newer, and obviously not original. The brake pedal appears to be the original rubber however. It is a little worn around the edges, but the "DISC BRAKES" insignia in the circle is still clear in the middle. Anybody know any other ways to figure out the mileage other than say, taking the cylinder heads off and checking the bores?

It's entirely possible that it only has 13k on it. The thing is, a lot of these vehicles; as is the case with many military vehicles, never or rarely left base. We have a 2000 step van (bread truck) out here that pretty much just sits on the flight line and idles all day and has under 2000 miles on it!

I'd go through and count the things that have been replaced. Maybe get service records from the guy you bought it from? If the fuel filter has been changes 5 times, or it's on its third set of alternators, chances are it's a roll-over.

Let us know if the vin data tells anything, that's a good idea, Gunboy!

I don't know about the digits lining up theory and unlike civilian vehicles, wear on the seats, armrest, flooring, engine compartment being clean are not determiners of low mileage as these were used by Soldiers and sat in motor pools a lot. Speedo heads are easy to change out too...

I had to think about this a minute and the only way I would be able to accurately figure out true miles would be to trace your CUCV to the last using military unit and from there to the "Motor Pool Daddy" and dig up dispatch and DA 2404s maintenance records. You will need to know the unit and bumper numbers if still stenciled and/or the NGO number (usually stenciled on the inside of the doors) plus look at the gov data plate.

If it came fro a NG or Reserve unit they rarely drove them so 25 year old truck can have low miles.I know we had some 2 1/2 tons with 3-4000 miles & some trucks had 60,000 miles.Hard to know without history records.some were rode hard & put up wet.
Good luck

My 1984 M1028 came from a NG base in AZ and had only 12,338 miles when I purchased it. It was pretty obvious the milage was accurate, as the engine compartment looked new and the plating on the brake reservoir cover and PCV valve was still shiney. The day I took possession I handed it off to my friend who is Service Manager at a local GM dealership. I asked him to do a "witch-hunt" to evaluate the truck. He kept it three days and found no issues, and stated that the truck was in as good of condition as the new ones currently being delivered from GM. He confirmed that the 12,338 miles was indeed original.

The truck sat in the AZ heat for 25 years with the windows rolled up, and was driven on average of 500 miles per year. The dash was cracked and all rubber was dry-rotted, but other than that, it was almost perfect. I am almost finished with a complete rebuild/restoration which began in June 2010. You can follow my rebuild thread at http://www.steelsoldiers.com/cucv/54469-kinda-got-carried-away.html .

My 85 M1010 had 11,200 orig when i bought it last year. it was an NCI JAG unit, and then sold to a small town in PA. for a S.W.A.T. truck, but was too slow n under-powered for the hills, so it was sold to me for cheap(my fav price!!) any issues mine had were definately not from mileage, but from lack of use.

just fyi, these trucks came from the factory with a 5 digit odometer. some of the replacements had the newer 6 digit(million mile) . what really chaps me is when i see an ebay seller with a replacement speedometer reading 13k miles telling folks that's original milage!! you bet!! thanks. mark[thumbzup]

the truck in my avitar has 34k showing and i believe it correct. i was the first owner after the govt. raised the hood, saw gm part numbers on the hoses, and the belts. original mufflers and tailpipes. left door still has gm sticker with matching vin. spare was still in the carrier. dash was red and not grey. ive owned 50 plus trucks and never had one with more than 50k. i think thats mainly because of the 4.56 gear. i ve had people actually say they thought their transmission was bad, it 's stuck in 2nd gear!! it wont run over 50!! blazers are a little different cause they will run with the rest of the traffic. ive had 10 or so 1009 and they have averaged about 40k miles.

ive seen gm odomter's with 300k and the numbers still look straight, not true about the mis alignment.

HM, big challenge!
So what to say to the problem: useually MV in Service go to depot maintainance after some 50 to 70,000 miles. In thedepot the vehicle is set to zero, means all parts are rebuilt to new standard.
With the age of the CUCV series vehicles, it is very well possibe, that they nowadays passed the depot maintainance. If you can not get the vehicle history on hand, it is very hard to say weather your odometer reading is correct.
The wear marks speak for the 13K miles.
