Cucv Drivetrain question

I recently bought a frame and was told it was a chevy cucv frame. Looks legit, has the strap points and has the 14 bolt corporate rear end. After cleaning the crud of of most of it I notice the front is a dana 44-8F. Did the M1008 ever come with a dana 44? Or one of the other chevy cucv's? If the gear ratio matches up with the rear, what is the max tires size I can before destroying the front end? I will be looking for a dana 60 in the mean time.

Thanks, Adam.

m1009's (blazers) had the D44 front 10 bolt gov bomb rear, 3.08 gearing. m1008's (pickup) had the D60 front and 14 bolt read with detroit locker, 4.56 gear ratio in the axles

Sounds like you got a earlier (pre 80's) 3/4 chevy frame. The D44 front axle never came in any Chevy CUCV. (Just the Dodge CUCV) The M1009 got a Corp. 10 bolt front end. (While many parts interchange, they are not the same axle)

M1008/1010/1028/1031's used 4.56 gears and detroit lockers in the rear as Gripy mentioned. The 1028 had a limited slip front end. Maybe you'll get lucky and that 14 bolt is already geared with a 4.56 gear and you can just swap front ends. (Also hope it has a locker)

As to tire size, 33" tires are about it for a stock truck with no lift.

It sounds to me that he has a Canadian K20 CUCV frame and axle set up. The Canadian army used the old round headlamp style 73-80 body style as CUCV's for years before the US adopted the newer 81-91 body style CUCV. And if memory serves me correctly they were based on the K20 not the K30. Check it out and correct me if I am wrong. I had one of the 1980 Canadian models and it was a gas motor not a diesel of course.
