CUCV towing issue

I am new to the site and to ownership of a cucv. I bought the truck a week ago. It is a 1983 long bed pickup with the 6.2. I drove it home about 130 miles without any problems. But when I hookup to a trailer weighing about 2500lbs it get real weak on the slightest hill. I have searched this site as muc`h as possible over the last week. This is what I know 1. when I throttle the truck the timing advance lever on the IP moves. 2. The IP has been advanced already. 3. The fuel screw has been turned a 1/16th turn. 4. Truck has a straight pipe (too loud muffler in future).

Sorry for the long post trying to give as much info as possible. Buying a liftpump today. It was cheap enough to swap it and it looks original. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

With about 150 hp and 220ft/lb torque, you won't be impressed with the power.

They chassis can handle much more than the motor can pull.

Welcome to the site. Take the trailer off and go uphill, just not too far from home, and see if it's still sluggish. If so, swap the fuel filter first and go from there. I've had the same problem. These trucks aren't beasts at towing.

I also may be time to rebuild your injector pump. 25+ years is a loooong time between rebuilds.

Your slugglish concern is what I like to call normal performance for a M1031 on 37's carrying around 'some equipment' in the box...too bad these trucks don't have a real Detroit diesel :p

I pulled a M1101 home tonight. It's only 1,500 hundred pounds and I still charged up hills with my M1028. I guess it depends on your definition of hills. No turn ups on my truck. It's just new with just over 6,200 miles showing.

Thanks for all the response. The truck pulls the same hills without dropping below the speed limit of 55 while empty. Maybe I was expecting more than I should. The filters are new. Thanks again for the help.

The cucv is a lot like a deuce in the power department. They will pull a house at 30 miler per hour.
I have had a few cucv's and civy trucks with the 6.2 diesel. Great off line low torque but over 30 miles per hour and they start to fall on there face. It is what it is.
You can get the best out of your 6.2 by having all clean filters, good fluids, and letting them warm up before hitting the road and letting them idle (cool down) for a min after use.
Enjoy the truck, ok fuel mileage and the turning head factor. Much more then that and buy something else.

It is a 1983 long bed pickup with the 6.2.
I need to correct you. It is a 1984 CUCV, not 1983 as there is no 1983 CUCV with model years being 1984 to 1987. Manufacture date is not always the year of a vehicle, and generally new model years start August to October.
