Cummins 2.8 Repower ??

Just an off the wall question.

Today I saw that Cummins is bringing out a 2.8 diesel crate motor, rated at 160 hp, 260 ft lbs torque. Since those are the same (2.8 has more HP) specs as the 4bt, I was wondering if anyone has used the 2.8 to re power a CUCV? It would be lighter and I am wondering if it would mate up to the stock trans.

ISF cm2250. Remember, most inline engines only turn 2500 rpm, so you would lose road speed unless you re gear. Also, it is new technology, it will cost more than the CUCV is worth and, it will require all the aftertreatment stuff, DOC, DPF and SCR.

OK, 3200. What does the 6.2 turn? Usually the RPM/Road speed ratio is 3 mph to 100 RPM, sometimes, 200 per 100, so, if the 6.2 is a 3600 rated RPM engine, that means 9 to 12 MPH slower, plus the aftertreatment crap.

From first hand experience, the aftertreatment crap is the killer, it is a micro managed cluster f

Diesel emissions have to match the emissions of when the chassis was made meaning what ever the diesel emission was for diesels in your state at the time like the mid 80s it has to match or be better. So unless your California it was almost nothing. So you can put a new Diesel engine in a 1986 with no egr, dpf and doc and still be ok but you cant put a 96 12v in your 2015 truck. Emissions have to match the "chassis" year. Even if they put dpfs and docs in these things give it a few mouths and a after market company will come out with a tuner and delete it. Btw these truck are getting to be 30+ years now so again unless your in California there is no emissions checks on diesels that are 30 years old so smoke away.

Well there you go then I live in md so I had to make sure my ass was covered with your strick emissions standards because for some reason a lot if are new diesel coming in have California idle stickers on them and they SUCK!!!! I guess it's cheaper to make a one shoe fits all truck.

The engine will be made to HAVE all the crap on the back of it, no way around it unless someone comes up with a hack calibration. You will be able to run it w/o the stuff until the system sees no aftertreatment, then you get 1000 RPM/5 mph

You need to do more research there buddy. Dirt every day just did a episode on this no to long ago. There already 50 state legal and don't require a dpf or doc they just have a egr. All they have to do is meet the NOx and particulate specs for the chassis rating. Diesel engines have different class in emissions aquirding to "chassis" rating so a dodge 6.7 will have a different spec then a international work star with a isb 6.7. So they classed it in a smaller chassis class to curb emissions and With a little programming and some calibration BOOM there you go a 50 state legal Diesel engine with no dpf or doc. And there company's already selling "off road" tunes to delete the dpf and doc from 08 and up trucks with OBD2 hook ups just don't let Uncle Sam catch you. But trump president now so there nothing to fear from the EPA nowadays, and trust me I know what I'm talking about I do this everyday the same old question is ask of me everyday, I deal with diesels and there ****ty emissions everyday I done fords to dodges to internationals I been there done that.

WillWagner The Cummins repower program, which the 2.8 is the first offering of, comes with different emission packages depending on the customers request. They all come with EGR but the DPF system is not mandatory and legal without it in all but California. So yes you can buy the engine directly from the manufacturer without the problematic emissions equipment. Cummins is able to sell it that way because the repower program is a crate engine meant for use in older vehicles. So long as emissions compliance is met for that year of vehicle it is legal.

The 2.8 is not new either. It's been available in other countries for the last few years just not offered in the US (for on road applications) until 2017. Has been a reliable motor except for in extreme cold areas. History of injector issues at temps below -20F. Cummins will also program the engine for more torque before delivery, currently up to 400ft/lbs is their highest offering on the 2.8.

Price?

The only thing they have not said is the retail price for these re-power engines. Ive attempted to get a quote several times but they have not responded yet. Still waiting. I see guesses from $8K to $17K!
It is good to hear they have been reliable. They are lighter then anything close in HP and it would be nice to be able to buy a complete brand new engine for a project.

At the cost $$$$ & hassle of messing with the computer crap + low HP numbers. It would be cheaper & easier to do a 12valve swap and be done with it. These little 2.8's are marketed for the bling Jeep crowd with their small engine compartments. Full size trucks like ours don't have that problem.

I was told at SEMA $11-12k if I remember correctly. I got tired of waiting and went with a crate LS-3 for my project. Wanted the HP anyway. Lol.

I got a notice from Cummins yesterday that these engines will be available to order on the 29th! Still no price but that will have to be available on the 29th. Time will tell.

Agreed, the planned price doesn't always match what it comes out to. 8k ish makes it very competitive with other crate engines of similar power which is their planned goal.

The number I've seen is $8,999. With that comes the front accessory drive kit, harness, fuel pedal and starter. I can't remember if anything else was included or not.
