I nned to remove several layers of paint from a data plate... I know the plate is acid etched with a stamped number. Anyway to remove the excess paint w/o destroying the plate?

I would try different paint solvents on a small part of the tag to make sure it didn't ruin it. Light sanding of top layers works.
Some tags are screen printed (the black part) with epoxy ink and are very resistant to solvents.
