most if not all turbos do not have seals. they rely on close tolerances to limit oil flow past the bearing and adaquate oil drainage to let it run back into the oil sump. there is a slinger ring that throws the oil off the shaft as it comes past the bearing. it the bearing is too worn more oil will come past than the drain can handle. you can judge the condition of a used turbo several ways. hold the shaft to the side and rotate it, if it rubs or drags at all it is bad. you should be able to feel the side movement of the shaft but almost not see it. it should not have and eny play. turbos fail mostly from not being cooled down correctly before the engine is shut down. if the housing is too hot the oil in the turbo will carbonize and this will build up with time blocking oil flow. some turbos have water cooled bearing housings to help with this but not ours.
