Deuce VIN's..

I was reading the 'sticky' on Deuce Vin decoding and have a few questions:

It looks like GL, at times, doesn't know what a VIN # is. Or at least not familiar looking per the sticky.. Do they confuse VIN's and S/N's and Reg #'s? Must make for paperwork HELL. Anyone had difficulty securing and/or registering their purchase because of this?

Are these all legitimate examples of Deuce VINS?

2,3,4 and 7 are correct but lack proper spacing. 1, 5 and 6 look suspect.

Don't confuse VINs and serial numbers. Older Deuces had serial numbers, either a five or six digit number sometimes with a four digit prefix which is coded to identify the type of truck. For example, my 1970 Kaiser Jeep has the serial number 14943 stamped on the frame rail, and 0539-14943 stamped on the data plate. The serial number is 14943, the "05" in the prefix indicates the truck was built as a cargo truck, the "39" in the prefix indicates the truck was originally built with a winch, although all that remains of the winch is the hole in the floor and the lockout plate for the PTO handle.

VINs on the other hand were an invention of the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sometime in the 1970s. It is a standardized alphanumeric vehicle identifier defined by NHTSA. The first 11 digits are coded and identify the vehicle manufacturer, where the vehicle was manufactured, model year, body style, powertrain and some other stuff I can't recall. The last 6 digits are all numeric and are the vehicle build sequence number - what we used to call the "serial number".

Any ideas? I thought they must know more than me.. Guess not.

The serial numbers on the trucks are the vin number for registration purposes even though they do not conform the the 81 and later Vin Standards. This is when the government mandated a standard format vin that includes a check digit to spot fake vins. None of the military tactical trucks will decode and the state registration authorities and insurance companies computer software will show an error. Use the term non conforming vin when you talk to them. Even the cucvs are trouble because the software does not recognize a D in the vin in the place of the C or K. D is government contract truck, C is a two wheel drive truck, and K is a four wheel drive truck. The rest of the cucv vin decodes just fine but some insurance companies will hiccup and want you to verify. My Secretary of State office would not decode. I just told the woman to code the weight in for a K full size Blazer and she just said OK and we went about our business. Some of the Deuce data plates (they will be the vin plates for the truck) have the serial number as the reg number followed by the serial number and some just have the serial number. I would title the truck by what the data plate said to avoid confusion in the future. That is my opinion as to what number to use. Using the frame serial number would be the most correct but it would not have the reg number on it. If you data plate just had the serial number I would just use that. Either would be OK but it would be best if your data plate matched the frame serial number exactly but that is not always the case.

If a previous private owner didn't add the winch, sometimes that stuff was added or removed by the Army. Sometimes hood numbers and data plates were swapped between trucks so that units tried to keep trucks they liked and got rid of the ones they didn't.

And I say "try" because sometimes units got caught doing that and trouble ensued.

Once you find the serial number on the frame we'll have another clue about your truck's history.
