Deuce will not start after several years of sitting

Hey everyone,
I’m new to this group! I’m with Sumner County Emergency Management in Gallatin, Tennessee. We’re in need of help with our deuce. Our truck hasn’t been started in roughly 6 years. Went to try and start it with brand new batteries as of today. When you flip the power switch, you can hear the fuel pump hum but that’s it. No crank or anything when you push the ignition button. I ordered a new button. What do I need to be checking for next? All help is appreciated. Also if your local or nearby and know these trucks well, I’d love to pick your brain!

As for your questions about the Deuce you have....

I'm sure others will be chiming in soon. Have you looked up the TM's (Technical Manuals) for it yet.... M35A2 or M35A3 I suppose?

Included in those publications are troubleshooting procedures as well as many functional explanations you really ought to be familiar with when "reviving" a dormant vehicle from its sleep.

- batteries hooked up correctly for 24V and at good voltage?
- battery cables well attached and the cables itself are not chafed where they go through openings/over edges?
- transmission is in neutral (you sure?) and you depress the clutch before attempting to start?
- grab a fan blade, press down on the V-belt and try turning the engine a bit, back and forth. Does it move? Feel smooth when it moves?
- starter sits on the passenger side, the solenoid is above it, attached to the engine block. Does it click when the start button is depressed?

Get out a DVOM and check voltage at the starter solenoid when the button is pushed, check grounds, visually inspect it for damage from critters, they seem to like the taste of wire insulation!. Don't go throwing parts at things, trouble shoot it.

Since the truck has not been started for that long remove the shut down cover on the IP. Check the fuel control unit assembly for free movement. Fuel control unit assembly should look like it is about the 7 o'clock position with you finger you should be able to push it to the rear about the 4 o" clock position and it should snap back to the 7 o'clock position. Always leave the shut down cable pulled out after you shut down the truck.

Yeah, as James said, a few things need to be done.
First thing I'd do is turn on the power switch and open the fuel bleeder on the secondary filters to verify fuel flow.
Next I'd check the fuel shutoff for movement. If it doesn't move, I wouldn't try to start it.

If it does move, I'd start checking voltage at the starter botton and then the relay that should be on the side of the motor block, just above the starter.

Post back up and let us know what you find!

Yep good call Chris never hurts to make sure fuel is circulating if she has not been run in that long of a time. It does not hurt to let the in tank pump run by it's self. Also if you find the fuel control unit assembly moving free do not forget to push the cable stop back in before you replace the cover if you did not do it before you removed the cover. This is an easy check of the fuel control ( two screws) and can prevent the motor from going wide open on start up. There has been fuel control unit assembly so stuck the shut down cable could not over come it or shut the motor down. You can only guess the mess in your paints after a runaway.

Another potential electrical gremlin is where the ground wire from the battery is attached to the frame. Take this off and clean it as it probably hasn't been touched since the truck was new and corrosion forms here. Remember: if you can't fix it with a hammer you have an electrical problem.

Yes and no to many people have not checked or even know about the fuel control till it's to late. Getting it to crank over is a small problem going to wide open throttle can be a big problem. That is the first thing I check on a truck I do not know period.

This is so true. Thank you Floridanson for the reminder. I haven't cranked my ole girl in awhile and will check out the shut off before I try to fire her up.
will need new batteries for sure. thinking about going to a different group battery & reconfigure my ole box

Yeah, as stated, it can save a lot of problems to verify a few other things first. By the time the truck cranks over, it would be too late to realize the fuel shut off doesn't work. Some simple preplanning goes a long way here.

10-4 on that. Good point. I definitely thought more of a fuel shut off stuck closed as the next issue.

Almost needs to be a sticky with big red letters. Always know about you fuel control and always leave the shut down cable pulled out after use. Problem someone who has not been to Steel Soldiers and does not read the sticky. They want a Deuce they find a Deuce they go to start and it goes to wide open throttle. They then get to hear about Steel Soldiers and there first post is I bought a Deuce and it went to wide open throttle what happend?
