Diagnostic Plug on a 1998 M1078

I'm trying to figure out why I have a 6 pin round J1708 diagnostic plug in the place of the old Allison diagnostic port on my 1998 S&S 1078 with a BAE data plate on it. BAE did a RESET in 2010 where they did a full repaint (among other things apparently). I didn't think A0 trucks had a network, let alone a 6 pin J1708.

Don't mind the Master Light Switch. I replaced the faulty pushbutton light switch that came with it with a spare 3 lever I had in stock.

The Allison and the CTIS both have J1939/J1708 busses even if the engine does not. Hook it up to a scan tool and see what you find.
Already checked the CTIS harness. Pins D, a, N, and A are all empty. D & a are for 1708 and N & A are for 1939. But I bet it's for the Allison alone.

I'm the TACOM Equipment Specialist for FMTV's and this is the first J1708 I've seen in an A0.

That 6 pin round deutsch plug is an Allison comms option for WTEC 2 and 3, besides the GM dual inline connector the earlier A0 trucks came with… I have both the GM and a round adapter for my pro-link. Also have a FL-50 ambulance at work with a WTEC2/cummins and the 6 pin round plug…

Nice. I was thinking of the NSN for the cable assembly - since the A0 was a paper manual truck and doesn't exist in electronic TM's that I've run across.

It appears to be in the 24P manual(they both are deutsch and GM connectors)…
In the end they use the same 4 pins. +DC, Ground and two serial lines

When you say "Electronic", I'm guessing you mean EMS NG or IADS? Cause I have the complete set downloaded in PDF.

I do have the A1, A1R book and the A1P2 in EMS NG. I also have the draft A2 in IADS.

Right. I mean EMS-NG. And yeah the A0 manuals are scanned into PDF - they are here on this forum for download actually. They were *originally* paper manuals back in the 90's. PDF is really just an e-book reader with some searching ability in this case. EMS-NG doesn't have any A0 stuff that I've seen. Only the newer A1, A1R, and A1P2 for FMTV's.

Ron - that's an interesting plug, From the picture that doesn't appear to be the standard J1939 plug found in the A1+ trucks. As you say it must be an Allison specific diagnostic plug.

Back in the day, J1708 standard plugs were 6 pin. The J1939 brought the 9 pin connector. Now you can do J1708 on a 9 pin no problem.

I'm going to "Borrow" an MSD V2 and a DPA 4 from work with the Allison software on it and hook it up. See what it can do.
