Other than their obvious size, what are the main differences? Why are there so few 1083s compared to the 1078s? Are most parts interchangeable between the two? Lastly, why would you select (or not select) one over the other? Thanks to all the valuable knowledge and resources on this site.

More of the 5 Tons are in use with sustainment/support units. These units are lower in priority to receive the upgraded/up-armored/up-armor ready trucks. The Army doesn't buy 100,000 trucks in one year, they'll by 10k for 10 years (plus a company can only manufacture so many).

There's also the possibility that the 5Ts are more often capable of being upgraded (aka later production/variants with heavier frames) vs. the 2.5Ts that the frame simply couldn't handle the upgrade.

Cab parts are mostly interchangeable. Rear axles are slightly different. 5 ton models have large aux trans coolers. Behind the cab on the tractor and hidden under the bed on the cargo versions. Higher HP on the 5 ton engine.

Parts are supposed to be 80% interchangeable between the LMTV and MTV. GS.org says the Oshkosh contract was for about 12,000 FMTVs over five years. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/fmtv.htm

I figured we're seeing more 1st generation LMTVs surplused out because they were purchased as replacements for M35 trucks so they entered the fleet in greater numbers before MTVs. Thousands of M939 trucks were far younger than the M35s so most MTVs were contracted later than early LMTVs. Those early LMTVs are getting surplused out since they're older, and generally older trucks are the first to go. That's just my opinion based on pure speculation. I did have a conversation with the XVIII ABN G8 awhile back and some of the fleet downsizing efforts being discussed at Corps and above have come to fruition since then. Some of the other ideas he mentioned being kicked around DA thankfully have not come to be. However, as the Army continues to shrink and with some modernization efforts still chugging along, we'll see more rolling stock sent off to DLA disposition services (formerly DRMO).

1 rear axle versus 2 rear axles is the main reason. Alot of interchangeable parts with exception of the early trucks. They were oddballs.

And there are still M939 series trucks in service now. When I left we had a BN with 900 series shelter trucks, they weren't slated to get replaced due to some SNAFU with TACOM. They got on the reset calendar but it won't happen until they deploy and redeploy again (ADA). That should be sometime in 2017 IIRC.
