Differences between 6.2 and 6.5 mechanical IP lines

Hello - I am preparing to replace my original 6.2 with a new 6.5 long block. I plan to retain the mechanical DB2 injection pump, but will install new 6.5 injectors. Question - will my original 6.2 injection lines bolt up to the 6.5 injectors? Are there any differences between the 6.2 and 6.5 lines?

Thanks in advance for help.

There are two different injectors. A long body, and a short, as long as you use the same body length you can use your lines. Now there are differences in pop pressures used for different applications. But they will bolt up. As far as the lines, Yes there are differences for turboed and NA engines. The nipples where the lines bolt to the pump are bigger and the lines have a larger ID to flow more fuel for turboed engines.. But to your question, Yes you can use the new injectors on your old lines and pump.

I wasn't quite sure about that statement... so I looked it up in the TMs. We are talking about the HMMWV 6.5L with the DB2831 IPs, right? According to TM 9-2815-237-34P, Fig.19 shows all of the 6.5L engines sharing exactly the same lines/part numbers. In the description it says UOC: 11E,12E,30E,40E,50E,60E,70E,80E,90E - for each of the eight different lines.

Is that not correct?:?

I think so. I’m mounting a DB2 mechanical pump on a new 6.5 long block and using new 6.5 short injectors. Just need to confirm that my old 6.2 lines will mate to the 6.5 injectors.

Long and short injectors also have s different thread pitch...fine and course, so based on the year of your heads, you can’t just use what you want on injectors.

I was thinking about the civi engines on the lines. For example my 6.5 in my 1028 has a 4911 pump. It has the bigger nipples. As far as the course injectors, They were only used in the 82 and 83 model year 6.2's These engines also were the red painted blocks. Starting in 84 GM started painting the engines black, These early engines used the same course thread injectors as the earlier olds 5.7 350 diesel. If you think a 6.2 is a bad engine, you should spend some time with a 350 olds diesel. You will think the 6.2 is a huge leap forward.

All 6.2 and 6.5 mechanical injection pump hardlines from injection pump to injector use the same thread and fittings. And follow the same path, so they are all technically interchangeable (to some degree).

Early 6.2 injectors were long body and coarse thread into head, later 6.2 were long body and fine thread into head. Very late 6.2 and all 6.5 used a short body and fine thread injector.

Any hardline from a 6.2 will work with 6.5 injectors, what may become an issue is the valve covers, some very careful bending of the lines may be needed.

There are several i.d. size differences as well, funny thing is almost all will tell you that 6.5 had the largest i.d. but that's actually incorrect, the early '82 and '83 had the largest i.d.. Mid production 6.2 had the smallest i.d. and then the 6.5 was mid range.

I'll have to do some digging, but I'll try to find the GM paperwork that states line i.d..

In short, using 6.2 lines with 6.5 injectors is fine.

My DB2 4911 pump uses the same 14mm X 14mm lines like the DS4 electronic pumps used on the 6.5. The 6.2 engines used 12mm at the pump and 14mm at the injectors. If you are using a 4911 pump from a 6.5 you will need the 14MM lines. Or swap to the 12MM nipples.

I've had 3 4911 pumps rebuilt, they all use 12mm threads (5/8sae or 16mm wrench) plus several other 6.5 specific pumps (any DB2831 pump)

They do sell an adapter so you don't have to change lines, but they are just as expensive as a new set of lines.

I'm not sure how that link will work, I can't seem to capture the picture and description so it's linked right here. You'll need to get to the store, and click on 'components' it's like the 3rd down.

In short, you have an odd mechanical pump, and the odds of any other mechanical 6.x pump having the larger fittings is very slim.
