Is there a way to get that insulated plastic cover off the doghouse without destroying it? Trying to get at the doghouse bolts with the lip of that cover in the way is very frustrating. I don't want to ruin anything getting the doghouse out. Is there a trick to this that I'm missing?

I just pulled on a corner of mine and it started to come loose. Mine was held on with glue so once it started, it came off rather easy.

Mine appears to not be glued down in the middle area around the shifter cable hole. But around the edges, I can pull on the plastic and bend it, but it doesn't seem to want to let go on either side of the insulation where it's glued. I'm afraid to pull very hard and maybe crack the plastic further or break it altogether. This is proving to b more difficult than I anticipated. Is there a solvent I possibly should be using here?

I also looked into possibly doing the job from the top/side without removing the doghouse cover, but... that doesn't appear very viable right now either. Really tight clearances and I can't see what I'm doing at all. I really want to get this done, I just don't want to break anything if I don't have to.

Remember that you can jack up the front of the cab to get more room from the topside, if that is the route you eventually take. Pretty easy to jack up.

okay, I screwed it up. Not paying proper attention to what I was doing, I managed to break the emergency shutoff valve off from the injection pump body. This is what happens when you get into too much of a hurry.

So. Where's the best place to get a new emergency shutoff valve, what's it likely to cost, and what's the best way to get the broken off portion out of the hole so I can put the new valve on when I get it?

You can use an easy out to remove it (I like the proto square type) and run without it. Most applications didn't have it at all, it's a military thing.

Easy-out. Okay, I have a small selection of several sizes. I'll go try to get the brokey threads out. I'd rather not run without the valve, though. It's there for a reason, and I've seen the dmaage a runaway engine can do. So, to source a new one after I get the old bits out. There's a Cummins dealer up here, I just found out tonight, I've never been there. They probably have it. I'll try them in the morning.

Update: I got the broken-off part out of the injection pump. It was easier than I expected. So that part's okay now. Still have to source the replacement emergency shutoff valve. I'll be calling Cummins Northwest in the morning to see what they can do for me. I expect it to cost an arm and a leg and my first-borne child (that seems to be the going rate for name-brand Cummins stuff), so if there are cheaper alternatives, I'd be delighted to hear suggestions.

This has been quite a learning experience for me. The lapping compound combined with PB-Blaster got the rear plug out without damage to the plug or my tools. I think I may have fatigued the front fuel line when I was placing it, so I'll probably pick up another one of those tomorrow and have another go at bending it into place. The rear went in without a hitch. The only real trouble I had was getting the doghouse off, and of course breaking the shutoff valve.

Truck is deadlined till I can get the replacement valve, but I think the dual fuel line modification should work well once the truck is back in operation. Looking forward to testing it out. I may put in a straight adaptor without a valve, just to get the truck going again, but I'd really rather not do that if I can avoid it.

While I'm thinking about it, I think somebody may have tinkered with it before I got to it. It shifts at about 2300 most of the time under even moderate acceleration. Should it be doing that?

Emergency Shutoff Valve, also called a "Plug Valve":

Per the parts manual, TM 9-2320-272-24P-1

SMR Code: PAOZZ NSN: 4820005888604 Cage Code: 30327 Part Number: 51807

Cummins doesn't carry it. Not a stock Cummins item, apparently it was installed by AM General per DOD requirements. The Cummins tech I spoke with at Cummins Northwest said that no Cummins engine has one of these by default, and recommended leaving it off. He said there is a manual shutoff on the injector pump already, making this valve redundant, but that it requires opening the hood to get to it. In an emergency situation, such as engine runaway, I don't really think I want to be racing to get the hood open when there should be a shutoff control in the cab already.

I may have to install some straight fittings untill I can replace it, I just don't really want to have to do that. So, I'm back to square one. Where do I source one of these?

Just called Cummins with the part number. According to their computer, there are none in stock in any dealer in the continental US, the "factory" does not have any, no estimated production date. There are some at a dealer in Belgium, can be delivered in a few days, price just under $140 not including tax.

Which is interesting, because similar parts from Parker and others are in the ten dollars range. I also asked about a Cummins-branded dual fuel conversion, the guy said he had no idea what I was talking, no such animal.

So... anybody got a local dealer with one of these valves in stock for a reasonable price? Maybe a take-off from a scrapped engine, out of a scrapyard, or other source?

Cummins people will have no clue what you're talking about without the engine number.

The "Big Cam" engines came with the dual fuel line setup stock.

Yes, pittsburg diesel sells them. However, I don't believe they'll work with the emergency cut off. Also you'll pay ~$100 for the kit from them. Or about $40 if you just buy the lines/fittings from a parts store and make it yourself.

I obtained mine with the assistance of local SS Cummins guru WillWagner. Send him a PM and see what he can do for you. And, I don't remember paying that^^ much for it.

When your work with cummins NW, call the one in Chehalis. They really know their **** down there, that's the only one I use any more. Trent is the guy to talk to, he is familiar with these rigs too.
