Engine identification

OK... so I talked to the retired Highway Patrol officer who does VIN inspections in my tiny town about what he needs to see during the inspection to sign off on a Kansas title. He confirmed that he's looking for two things: the VIN and that the engine matches the vehicle. We didn't get into why the engine needs to match the VIN (what about perfectly legal engine swaps, as done all the time on hotrods?) I think this might be because there's a special title category for vehicles that have a motor from a manufacturer other than the one they came with

Whatever the reason, if I bring a humvee to him, is there a relatively easy way to show him that the motor is of the correct size to match. I googled (honestly) but didn't find an answer as to whether the engine is marked in some way (a 6.2 or 6.5 stamped on it, a data plate somewhere) so I was hoping for additional advice.

There is, but any 6.2, 6.5 or if you are really lucky a 6.5 GEP engine is considered stock. There is a PM bulletin that advises how to identify, but if its a 6.2 should have a sticker on the valve cover.

Also, the only VIN he will find on a stock truck is the data plate, if it "needs" to be somewhere else, it will need to be added as a non standard item. Its very hard to explain that the frames were meant to have parts replaced if needed and are not stamped.

That's an internal identification number that AMG uses and has no correlation to the number on the data plate for purposes of validating vehicle data plate number. If you're lucky, the number may be close, but frequently they aren't.

The number isn't close - It is the exact same number as my VIN number on my data plate. Stamped into the A Pillar at the windshield.

Congratulations, maybe buy a lottery ticket as more often than not, it's found not to match. Again, ya probably shouldn't necessarily rely on it to verify the data plate number, unless you get lucky.

What Lawdog says is correct..that FONT is not correct for that stamping and that is not where the mfg'ing ID gets stamped....it gets stamped on the lower sill, no visible when the hood is closed.
someone stamped it to make it pass the VIN verification, the vin Ver form asks for 2 locations....and there aren't 2 locations on a hmmwv.

It looks like the humvee I was thinking of buying got away (wasn't fast enough convincing the wife this is the truck we need ) but am still looking.

Make sure you do your homework and understand fully what you're getting yourself into. HMMWV stands for High Maintenance Money Wasting Vehicle.
