engine troubles

i just bought a 1955 xm221 and diving it home form the auction today i could only get it to go about 30 mph. it would seem to rev up just fine on hills most of the time but when it would shift into the last gear, when i pressed the gas pedal down to far the engine would start fluttering and backfiring.

the truck has been sitting for a few hours now and i went to fire it up to check cows, and i cant seem to get it to start.

anyone have any idea where to start looking for problems?
