Have you checked the exhaust? I had an exhaust pipe crack and separate from the muffler. The pipe was still butted up against the muffler, just cracked the whole way around, so there was a small airgap for the noise to propagate through.
The engine sounds really clattery and tinny with an open exhaust, especially under load. At idle there was no sound change.
