exhaust manifold

Guys I need some advice. One of our Deuces at work blew a turbo. We were attempting to put on a used one today and Wreckerman must have dropped Mr. Murphy off to help. We broke off the back two studs under the manifold. They were all very rusty and even though we had hosed them down with wd-40 for several days they sheared off. Question is should we attempt to drill and tap them in place or is it better to removed the intake and manifold and take it to a machine shop? Thanks

You will need studs for the inner ones, so they need to be drilled out and tapped. Machine shop is probably the only option...

Personally I would not use WD40 as a penetrant, next time try GM Heat valve lubricant, CLP or Kroil.

we have excellent success at the shop with PB-Blaster.

Agree 100% with PB-Blaster and Kroil as penatrant; WD-40 is totally useless for that application, and its use will typically result in just what happened to you - broken parts, and more work that needs to be done.

WD-40 works well for what it was designed to do - displace water. Also does a fair job as a lubricant when machining aluminum, and stopping door hindges from squeaking. Other than that, its range of usefulness is limited.

Are the lock nuts on the exhaust manifold studs hard to remove? Maybe some heat and pb blaster?
