Fans mounted on the radiator

I’ve seen some pics of engines that have 2 fans mounted on the radiator. Is that for an AC unit or is that to help cool? If it is to help cool does it work well?

There was a mod in Iraq involving adding some electric fans to supplement the regular cooling system because honestly the HMMWV cooling system kind of sucks. It helps out in extreme heat, and would probably help keep the regular fan from coming on as often in lower heat conditions.

We mounted a 14 inch fan in a pusher configuration, toggle switch
works good when we’re in city traffic or off-road.

We use fans like this mounted directly to the radiator for cooling high performance engines where we dont want a pully for the fan and then of course we are using electric water pumps also. YES you can move a heck of a lot of air no matter what the engine speed is and you can run both the pump and fans after engine shutdown to holp cooling.

The cooling issues are very unique to the HMMWV, it was designed for low speed operation, the factory fan moves allot more air than any electric fan/s that are available.
That hole in the hood is a big issue with me, we learned back in the 60s (and maybe actually earlier) that a hood scoop turned around backwards worked much better at highway speeds as the air at the front half of the hood is very disturbed or there is no flow at all. (also known as cowl induction)
Look at the Funny Car, that is the one race car with what could be described as a factory body and the induction is at the rear of the hood.
One of these days I will get off my lazy butt and put a bunch of tufts on the hood and prove in, I have watched various insects just bounce around on the hood next to the opening whereas if there were a significant amount of air moving at that point it would have blown the insect off.
