I used to live there. MI people need to fight this tooth and nail. Get a petition going. They are using classic AAMVA tactics which are based on false narratives. They need to understand that many of these vehicles WOULD meet the EPA requirements for their respective time periods. They also need to be educated on the military safety standards vs civilian vehicles. It's easier for them to say that all MV do not meet standards, rather them looking closely at the truth. It is less work for them, but discriminatory.

The pen is mightier than the sword. Organize and take this on.

It only effects HMMWV's , there are no issues registering any other MV's just have your paperwork in order before you go to the SOS. Michigan is MV friendly for everything other than HMMWV's

Porkysplace is correct. The SOS is more than happy to title and register your non-HMMWV military vehicle and take your money ASSUMING you have all the correct documentation they ask for, don't give them any lip and are not doing something specious like attempting to register a 5-ton as a 23,000 pound pickup truck!

But I am confused by the negative comments about the Bills and the petition...

I am assuming you all have read the three bills (SB344, SB345 and SB346) passed and sent to committee on Tuesday? I have and need some clarification on the reactions to them and the petition.

Are you arguing and petitioning against the bills that were introduced and passed on to committee that would give Michigan HMMWV owners currently unable to title and register their vehicles for on-road use (because of "off road use" sf-97's) a way to legally title and register your vehicles, albeit with "Historic Vehicle" restrictions? I can't figure it out...

I thought the fight of the HMMWV community here in MI specifically was to get the "off road use" branded vehicles recognized for regular "on road" use. Isn't a "Historic Vehicle" designation a good first step towards that goal? Use an incremental approach? Show the state that you are appreciative hobbyists and good citizens that will operate under the restrictions and don't have any major "incidents" with your vehicles for the opposition to point to and then at a later date go after legislative changes to get options for full no-restriction usage?

The SOS will never be supportive of registering any moving vehicle branded for "off road use" as it is outside the norm and puts them in an uncomfortable position. You are not going to get from "no use" to "unrestricted use" in one shot.

OK. Fine. Prove to them they are wrong and your HMMWV's can be safely operated on our roads by responsible owners!

Hello we are looking at all options and yes a historic option is a win I agree like you stated everything can be achieved in steps. There are things in the works already.

All of this comes from a common arena, the AAMVA.

When you do battle, be sure to go to the AAMVA website to get a feel for their issues. Most are baseless. Please do not send nasty emails to them. They just need to be educated. From what I read, they don't want to take the time to categorize MV. It is easier to say "All are bad" as opposed to "there are vehicles that can safely operate on the road, we just need to spend the time to figure that out". Taking all MV off the road is discrimination. The EPA battle is shallow. Many trucks MEET EPA standards for that time period. Safety standards? They never took the Corvair off the road, nor any other vehicle deemed unsafe. Do they know about military safety standards? Probably not.

Laws are not to be enacted for the convenience of a governing body, but many are. That is, until someone sheds light on it.

I digress. Military trucks, tumbles, and heart attacks....

In the last couple of years HUGE numbers of people in the US have retired. In fact, this is the largest population EVER to retire in the US. The top causes of death among these people is a fall or myocardial infarction (heart attack) or stroke (CVA). If there is flooding, large snow fall or other hazards, these people will likely die. Most ambulances are not 4x4. The National Guard will be way too late.

Who will they (or the city) call for help????? YOU. All of us know in the back of our minds that we will likely be called to assist someone. Let people in the legislator know this.

I am informally building a database of video footage of MV vehicle rescues. If you have a video, please post it. A video speaks volumes. Again, the number of people impacted in massive. No, we are not a medical transport service, but I doubt anyone on here would refuse to help someone in need.

So if I buy a state titled, say Wisconsin state titled military vehicle like a deuce, and try to title and drive it in Michigan, they’ll let that happen? I currently have a Michigan titled deuce and every time I talk to them they say they wouldn’t title any more military vehicles and I’m lucky because I’m grandfathered in.

Just titled and registered a 1971 M35A2 last month with no issues what so ever less than 20 minutes at a rural SOS office.

Was it a title transfer from another state? What do you think they’d do if you tried to transfer a title straight from the government if you buy a truck at auction? On one hand I’m glad I listened to them, otherwise I’d probably have bought an MTVR among others and had no money. On the other hand I’d have more trucks!

MTVR here we come!
Marquette

If you do get that MTVR make sure you have plenty of extra funds left over in your bank account to pay the SOS for title and registration.

Unless you are eligible for Farm plates you would be looking at GVW plates at 63,000 lbs. That will set you back a cool $1600+ each year.

God knows what even PLPD insurance will run you on that beast here in MI...and I would carry more than just basic no-fault on something that size.

I do see the curb weight at about 30,000, and weight carrying at 30,000. I haul junk and sometimes people with my deuce, so it usually doesn’t have too much weight in it. A guy could plate it for whatever the planned cargo is, as long as it isn’t over weight.

I only end up driving mine for up to 6 months per year anyway because we travel for work and the truck needs some repair to be road worth for longer distances. It would be totally worth $1600 per year to be able to drive an MTVR around with capability to haul max weight!

Just spent 1 hr getting a Deuce titled for the 1st time, (not my 1st time, the trucks 1st time) 1971 General Products div of Jeep. They wouldn't use Jeep as it wasn't on the SF97. Couldn't use General Products as it wasn't in the system, It is now!! One of the ladies was determined that I couldn't title it but the one working with me knew better.

So, I bought a new truck, an M51A2, and the guy had been running farm plates on it for 10 years. After talking to him for awhile, I decided I could also use farm plates, and the truck would be much easier to keep on the road with a $20 plate instead of paying for 40,000 plates.
How “eligible” does a guy need to be to run a farm plate?
