Fix for m35a2 gear shift shaft slop on transmission shifter top joint?

My M35A2 has all kinds of slop and wobble on the joint between the top transmission shifter peg and the bolt on gearshift shaft.

The shaft clamp bolt is tight and the shifter shaft hole may be wollered out.
What is a good fix? I was thinking using a shim in the joint or machine a split sleeve to take up the slack.

You should have seen me try to shift going home with the truck when there was about 6 inches of wobble in the shifter knob!

Do you have the correct size bolt in it?

Are you saying your shifter lever will not tighten on the stub shaft?

That bolt should be able to be torqued up to70 ft/lbs.

I am guessing that it has been loose for a while and wore down the stub and the inside of the stick clamp, I would spread the clamp a bit, use some shim stock around the stub, then clamp over the shim stock.

You can use coke can trimmings to wrap the stub shaft as shimming material. I know it's kind of a booger fix bit it will work and be more or less permanent depending on the care and time you take to do it.

Thanks guys I will check the bolt and clamp gap. That is a new one one me to use a pop can as shim strip.
I once fixed an inner fender on a VW where two sheet metal valleys meet by cutting the ends out of a DAD's Root Beer can and split the side and POP Rivets to hold in place till I got undercoating shot on.

Lots of tricks the old timers knew, like Gus's Garage in the old Popular Mechanics magazines.

This 1968 M49A2C had the tank removed and a Army flatbed installed. It has 13,000 miles showing with 6000 since overhaul in1990 and CARC paint in 1994. This truck went to the local VFD as a tanker truck till the boys got their fill of armstrong steering. A farmer bought the truck and used it to haul hay and replaced oiled clutch and brakes. She needs an in tank fuel pump but will start ok if it does not sit too long. Mark
