Flame heater

I've a question, looks like this engine is w/o the flame heater. So . . . does that mean it won't operate as is? Or, does it have some other kind of pre-heat?

I've watched some of the things you eagle-eyed individuals have spotted in a photo, and I'm sure that I'll prob get more info than I thought poss.

When you say "without", do you mean, it is removed? or does it have an ether start kit?

They usually have one or the other. If parts are missing, you may have open fuel lines and intake air leaks.

The truck will(should) start just fine with no cold start aids, down to about 30 degrees F. A really good condition engine will start just fine, in even colder temps, with no aid.




Edit, you added a picture while I was posting! That truck has an Ether kit on it. Notice the band clamp on the firewall, near the steering column. That's where the ether bottle mounts.

I'm no expert on the ether set up, but it looks as though there is a empty bracket for a canister on the firewall , drivers side.

If it is gone and has open fuel lines what would be required to operate it?

It has the ether kit, it can be run with no bottle installed.

I agree. It looks like the truck is set up for ether start. You can see what looks like the bracket. If everything is there, you most likely just need to add a can of ether. These are readily available. The ether start controls should be on the lower portion of the dash panel, just left of the steering shaft. It is located in exactly the same place as the flame heater controls would be located. Ether start works fine on my truck, but as mentioned earlier, nothing is normally needed until you get down to below ~30 F. and much lower for some trucks.

Included in the "Ether" kit will be a thermostatic switch permanently set at 20°F, located in the area marked below. It disables the operation of the starting aid for temps above 20 degrees...

Thank you all for your wisdom and insight, or should I say photosite. I feel much better about doing a recovery on this unit now. Will keep everyone updated as to how that goes.
