This is a 'gee whiz' fact about the FMTV's. Add other notes to this thread if you like:

I had a funny event this morning (funny looking back on it). I wanted to check the engine oil in a flat place, not like where I park, so I coasted down to a low spot on the driveway.

Got out, walked around to the cab tilt hydraulic unit, tried to raise the cab. Nothing. No effect whatsoever when I set the valves and pushed the air button to pump. Like there was no air. Dang. Reading all about everyone's failures and here mine is bad now too. Used the manual pump to raise the cab and lower it, worked fine. Tried the spare stowage jack, worked fine manually. Zilch from the air system.

Got back in the cab and it hit me: Since it's the low spot, I didn't go to the trouble to put the brake on. Maybe there is no air to rise the cab if the brakes are not engaged. Safety feature? So I put on brakes, tried the pump again and all is well.

The hydraulic pump does not get air unless the truck has the parking brake on!

That makes sense when you think about it. You really don't want to be operating the hydraulic features without the vehicle secured. I can see how it didn't occur to you though. I've done similar things many times. It's the "cost" of education to do things manually a few times. Then I remember much better!
