I have taken the liberty to copy this post below from the mil-veh list.

It would certainly be of interest to me and probably many of you Southerners could help make it happen.
Kenny (recovry4x4) is planning a trip to rdixiemiller later this summer and could perhaps extend his trip a little and make it coincide with the rally. Yeah, Kenny, you mentioned the cost of fuel for the next Aberdeen and I was thinking that I could probably figure out a way to bring a couple of hundred gallons of cooking oil to Augusta for you to use for the trip next year.
I'll soon have more oil than I can use so if you are interested, I'll start putting some away for that purpose.

I am hoping to do Ft Gordon too. I have also been looking into getting the fuel deal going very soon. I do have more time than money so I'm considering branching out to the bio route. Gee, keep me in mind with the extrs fuel.

Here is an update, the show is on!

The Military Vehicle Show, Swap Meet and trail ride at Fort Gordon is a
"go!"

Dates are: 30 Sep - 2 Oct 2005

This event is run in conjunction with the annual Octoberfest Celebration.
German food and beer will be available.

No setup, space or other fees!

There will be a registration, and being a Military Post all adults wishing
entry that do not have a DoD sticker on their vehicle will have to have ID
to get on post.

Our legal folks will be coming up with some form of release for those who
want to participate in the trail rides. Not sure what the weather will be
like, but I'll try and find some mild and challenging trails.

I'm going to coordinate for some wash racks too so folks who do the
challenging route and clean up their vehicles before they load up to go
home.

We'll have a number of sites available for overnight stay for those who want
to "rough it". We have on post campground spaces with drains/dumps, as well
as some off post campground/cabins at the Army Recreation Center at Lake
Thurmond, which is about 40 miles away.

Thanks to some input from others on the list, I'm putting together a pretty
good list of do's and don'ts so that everyone has a good time.

Still looking for some help with field organizers, etc.

We're finishing up our Fourth of July festivities this weekend, and
Octoberfest will become our major focus.

I'll have the actual POC for the event in the next few days.

Kenny, if you go, what will you be driving? Same config as Aberdeen? I'm serious about the extra cooking oil (not biodiesel). Would it help for next year's Aberdeen and can you load 30-40 5-gallon jugs? They are plastic jugs enclosed in stackable cardboard boxes 10x10x16 inch size. Each weigh about 35 lb.
The oil can be stored for a year or more in a cool dark place. Florida?

If I an able to go I'll drive the tractor. Not sure about the trailer but I might bring it. As far as Aberdeen next year I'm not certian if I'll be able to take the time from work to attend with the MV. I am looking for a source of cleaner cooking oil Seems the folks here ise it until it turns pitch black. With the expense of fuel, I'm looking into the possibility of producing biodiesel. Once I get a supply of oil I'll start trying to figure out the recipe.

Kenny, send me a sample of the oil you can get. I can process it and compare it to the result I get from the oil I'm using here.
The oil in the fryer at the restaurant here, is kept at 360 degrees. If the temp isn't much above that then the amount of contamination shouldn't matter IMHO. Now it probably WOULD matter as far as the quality of the food served at the establishment. If the oil looks bad, don't eat there. :)
If the oil is burnt (if there is such a thing) then it may effect the end result.

We are still learning here...

Thats a deal Bjorn. So at 90% everything seems to be working normally? How about power? If I could get to even 75% it would be a huge savings. How much methanol and lye is used to produce 5 gallons of biodiesel?

At 90% (biodiesel to petro diesel) the power is very nearly the same, can't really tell, BUT the turbo boost is down a couple of psi and the EGT runs cooler, so I suspect that there is a difference in power.
Fuel consumption is up, 7-8 mpg vs 8-9 for straight petro diesel.

My formula, which is processed at room temperature (clear oil which runs freely through a 5- micron filter). The white mucky stuff at the bottom of each jug is kept for later. I'll need to heat it to process.

30 liters of oil (about 8 gallons)
6 liters of methanol (about 1.6 gallons)
150 grams of Red Devil lye (about 5 ounces)

I mix the methanol and lye in a glass jar. Takes about 20 minutes or so. Then pour it into clear storage tub, which contains the oil. This is stirred for about 1/2 hour until uniform . Let sit for a couple of days and take the biodiesel from the top. About a 1 inch layer on the bottom is discarded (dark residue, glycerine).

That's it, I make two 30 liter batches at a time, which yields about 18 gallons of biodiesel.

I don't wash it, so it probably contains some methanol.

Exhaust appear clean, well you have seen (and smelled) it.

After about 1,000 miles on this stuff, the fuel filters appear to be in good condition (= no apparent degradation due to fuel starvation).

For more, see the "Alternate fuel, Biodiesel" thread.

I have seen Bjorn's set up very simple and practical. and at the rate of fuel its going to be very useful especially in the deuce.
I was talking with my dad today after he came back from town, the service station nearest to me diesel is 2.31 a gallon/ farm fuel 1.95... He told my dad that by Monday the 11th gas was going up 20 cents on the gallon, now im not sure if that all 3 grades over all or if thats just one grade i can't tell you that. THAT IS CRAZY!

It was good to see you again, James, you are welcome to stop by at any time and I'll try to keep you up to date on the biodiesel stuff.

If you don't have a source of used cooking oil, there isn't much one can do. I collected poor quality oil from a pizza place for about 6 months and only really got going when the relatively good oil became available from Jim's Grill. They change oil twice a week and most of the time I can pick it up so the average volume now is about 20 gallons/week.
My connection with the Go cart race track is not terribly reliable, sometimes I have to wait for a delivery up to two weeks (methanol). If I had the cash, I'd buy a 55-gallon drum at a time, but as it is now it's batches of 10 gallons. Cost for methanol is $2.50/gallon.

Adrian (my son) spotted a black bear near the house two times during a 2-3 week period and you may be on to something, James, when you suggested that the bear may have been attracted to the smell of french fries from the deuce exhaust! I had the deuce running for hours at a time recently when working on the log cabin kit (crane work to hanle logs etc).

A side effect of using biodiesel. :)

I'm planning on riding down to the event unless something pops up at work or something...
I'm also getting ready to put together a biodiesel processor that is fabricated out of an electric hot water heater (see http://www.localb100.com/cbt/appleseedprocessor/ ) since I really don't want to run SVO in the Cummins M37 (wouldn't mind running it in my M35A2 or M35A2C but I figure that I'll just cook up Biodiesel for everything...).

I've got several race tracks near me as well as bulk chemical/fuel suppliers so if anyone needed methanol or such, I could bring some to the rally...

This event is coming up at the end of this month, so this is just a reminder. I'm still planning on going, but need a bunch of little things done to my deuce...

Glad that you reminded me. Got things to do to all my trucks (figure that the M37 will make the trip right now...). Also, need to pull some parts for you...
Want to figure out a meeting spot so that we can convoy? Say, Greensboro or the rest stop between Greensboro and Charlotte assuming that you are going to run down I85 once you hit NC??

I'll be going down I-77. It's a straight shot for me and it would be great convoying again.

Finally some plans from our plans folks!

I've got 15 spaces reserved at our on post campground at Leitner Lake. If
we need more, you have to tell me quickly.

I'm going out with him tomorrow to recon some trail ride routes. Good
things to come with that. A hunter was out reconning hunt sites....got his
4x4 buried!

My plans guy is the primary POC. If stuff sounds weird or he isn't getting
you what you need, email me. His boss and me are peers!

Here's his words of the day:

Sir: Thank you for your support in making our event more dramatic with your
displays. I am sure that all the participants will enjoy our past history.

My Name is Bobby Ramtahal and I am the Operations Specialist in the Plans
Branch. My Telephone Number is 706-791-8264 and my email is attached.
Parking for the displays vehicles will be on Rice Road. I am trying to
coordinate a lodging location and a trail ride. Please provide me a list of
names with SSN, types of vehicles entering the installation, weapons
nomenclature and functionality. Please indicate any needs for life support
items. Again thanks and all the Best.

No longer 100% sure I can go. Times flies and still too much to finish....

Come on guys, this is a new event here in the southeast, we are trying to get a group to travel together from the Atlanta area, so far three trucks, one with big trailer hauling smaller trucks, and possibly another if his schedule works.
Bjorn, we can have more of the heat loss conversation there if you can make it.
Will even be a good time to see one of the effective MV to commercial trailer power and brake converters.

I really wanted to go, planned it for months, but complications have arisen, my father in law had a severe stroke a couple of weeks ago and my wife decided it best for her to leave for California. This has effected the schedule and I may not be able drive down to Augusta next week after all.

Sorry.

Most likely Saturday, most MVers have to work to feed the hobby.
Do you want to ride down with us, we will be going through Atlanta at approximately noon on Friday, current schedule and heading out I-20, have a pick-up just beyond Conyers for another participant.

I was really looking forward to going to this event as it is only 80 miles for me. Unfortunatly several family events have been set for that weekend and I will not be able to attend. I had looked forward to meeting some of you guys and playing with my truck. I hope the event is a success and is held again next year.
