Drop your transfer case and find out which bearing is bad. if it was mine, I'd splatter the whole case and change all the bearings. You said that the oil had metal in it? That metal, along with the oil, was used to lubricate all the other bearings. So if you just replace the one bearing chances are another onewill fail later on down the road. And it might not give any warning when it does.
Good luck and take pictures of what you find.

It is easy to drop the transfer case, Pull the covers that are above it and lower it with a chain fall. The truck is tall enough that if on concrete you can slide it out from under the truck after it is laying on the ground.

It will be one of the upper bearings. They are not always adequately lubricated. Also If the transfer case has a rear facing pto and was left in neutral without the PTO engaged, that will cause the top to lose lubrication as the PTO lube pump does not run.

Transfer cases are prett simple. The main thing is to set the shaft endplay with a shim kit as you put it back togethor. I would inspect all the bearings. Some of the others may have been contaminated with metal from the failure of the first one. So you will need a gasket set, shim kit, and some bearings, Probably the repair will be pretty economical.

How can I lower the transfer case to the ground safely? I have a guy that is willing to come do it with me but will charge per hour..if I can do it myself, I would rather do that...

Thanks for the advice.

drain the transfer case
Take the cab top off the truck
remove the passenger seat
remove the floor cover over the transfer case
disconnect the three drive shafts
disconnect the air lock air line/or sprag linkage.

put a piece of metal or strong wood beam across the top of the cab
Hang a small chain fall from the beam
pull a bolt (or two)from the top of the transfer case and reinstall a longer bolt through a peice of chain to hang it from the chain fall
remove the three mounting bolts through the rubber shock mounts.
shift the transfer case so it slides off the mounts
lower it from the truck onto the ground
be careful!

When on the ground lay it on its side and it will be low enough to slide out from under the truck.

O, I forgot, there is a tach cable to unscrew too.

And you can do it yourself. I have swapped three engines and a couple of transfer cases alone. The transfer case is easy.

Same issue I think I am having

When I bought this M35-A2, I dove it approx 40 miles .. soon after it would jump out of gear and start a gear grinding noise. It manually goes right back into gear * This only would happen at above 35 MPH.
Do you think this could be the same issue?

That's true...

So best bet is to...what?

Put it up on stands and pull the wheels out, change bearings, inspect everything real nicely...

Should I venture in to the top loader and see is any damage was caused there?
