front hub modification

I want to put a locker or weld the spiders in the front diff. for off roading at the river. I have a extra set of front hubs, I was thinking of machining the splines out of them to use for street use. I worried the splines on the end of the axle rubbing against the modified hub and ruining the splines. Does this sound likely?

I found another thread where a member had posted the same question, but the replies where all blank(old website maybe?)

I machined the splines out of my extra set to unlock the front axle when I drive on the road. I've put over 6000mi on them without any problems.

Most machine out the splines and have a bushing fit in for the end of the axle to ride in.

If you want to afford them, they do make lockout hubs.
