I took the bolts out of the front drive flange but it won't come off. I didn't think it was necessary for the wheel to come off, am I wrong? I read that you can put the front drive flange on one rear axle for economy, among other reasons. Is that a de-splined front or is it that the rear axle won't engage the front flange. I want to put a set of lockouts on the front. That is what spawned these questions. Thanks

if you take the bolts off the front hub it "should" come off. There is a Gasket that may be cooked on. Use a little common sense and take it off. There is nothing else holding it on. When you take out a rear axle and install a front hub plate is you are disconnecting power to that axle.

here's my .02...

2deuce,

I pulled both axles out of my front-back rear to help free up the tandems while highway driving, and it made a big difference.

If you do go that route though, you'll still need to be able to lock your front axle in at times when the rears loose traction going over dips & humps.

All my driving is 'On Road' so this works well for me.

You may also want to consider putting a lock out hub on one side of the front-back rear to loosen things up and you can still off road. Then you can pick when you want everything locked up and when ya don't.

There's plenty written on this subject if you search back thru the Deuce forums.

Good luck...2cents

Any pointers? I have hit it hard with a big hammer and wood between. Bigger hammer I guess.
To put on a lockout on the rear, do you also need an axle made? If you unbolt the axle does it pull out? and what about seals? I've got to go on a long trip(at least for a deuce). Thanks

the flanges on the front axle have threaded holes across from each other that take a 1/2 inch bolt to push the flange off

5 ton has that. I got it off but had to hit my hand when the hammer came off the handle, then it came off. Had alot of condensation rust in there. Thanks

When you unbolt the rear hub cover, the axle is attached and comes right out. There 'should be' little or no oil at the hub because your rear wheel bearings are greased bearings not oiled.

You do need an axle cut for a rear lock out, but more than that I can't tell ya. Best bet is to contact one of our members that sell the lock outs and get the correct info from them.
