Fuel Cutoffs, PTOs, and other confusing things

Hopefully I don't mess up on my inagural post. I've been reading every thread I can find for the past week or so trying to absorb all the info I can.

I've read quite a few thread saying to crank the motor for a couple seconds every time you start it up with the fuel pump cut off to check for hydrolock. I recall seeing pictures of dashboards containing a fuel cutoff switch, but I also see others without. Does the engine stop handle double as a fuel cutoff?

Also, what does the engine stop handle do to stop the engine? I could imagine that it's either a fuel cutoff or a decompression handle, but I'm not sure which and I haven't found a lot to say either way. Granted, I haven't read the TM cover to cover, but I'm working on it.

Finally, are there 2 PTOs on every deuce, or is there just the one for a winch and an optional one that's only present on dump beds, pole setters, and possibly fuel trucks? From what I can tell, the front PTO for a winch is present on every truck regardless of whether it has the winch or not, but I'm not sure whether the second PTO is present on every truck. I was thinking I might like to run a PTO-driven generator off the rear PTO if it's present on the truck I get.

I'm looking to get a deuce in the next month or 2, but I'm going to go through a more local guy who seems to buy them off GL and resell for a slight profit. I don't have any bases where they're liquidating deuces from anywhere within a 7 hour drive from me, so I figure this will be a better route because before I buy I'll know it's a runner and can do a more thorough inspection on it. I'm thinking my preference right now is for a M35A2 with a winch on the front, cargo bed, with a cover, and a hardtop cab. Whether the bed is a dropside or not, I'm not picky, but it'd be a perk. I don't have a preference either way for the turbo, though I think I want the turbo despite not getting real power gains from them. Definitely want the air actuated transfer case, not the sprag case. From what I can tell, the air handle to engage the front axle in the cab is the giveaway for which it has?

I'm so excited about buying one I've been having dreams about it. I can't wait!

Thanks!

The transfer case has a plate where the PTO can be installed, but very few come with a PTO unless they have had a winch. PTO's for the reverse directions usually have two output shafts, one in front, one in back. there is no place to mount two PTO's on a single transfer case.

The engine stop cuts off the regular fuel flow to the engine. Keep reading the TM's!

In all fairness, many members on this site have been in the mindspace you are in right now.
I prescribe 4 hours of daily SteelSoldiers forum reading, to get answers to questions you did not even know you have.

As far as your thoughts (questions?) above are concerned, if you went out to throw a rock at a random Deuce (just a figure of speech, don't do it!), you are most likely to hit a turbo multifuel without dropsides, but with air engaged front axle. Unless modified at some point in its life, the truck will not have a front PTO unless winch equipped. The truck will not have a rear PTO unless a dump truck, pole setter, tanker etc.

There is no "decompression handle". The "engine stop" handle is synonymous with "fuel shutoff" and the name explains how it works - sets the injection pump quantity to zero.

The route, for a first-time buyer, to buy a truck that has been looked over by someone experienced is often recommended.

You have three types of PTOs found on deuces.

One is the trans PTO for the winch. It faces toward the front to drive the winch.

Two is the accessory drive. It bolts onto the back of the trans PTO to give you a rear output. Found on dump trucks to power the hyd pump.

Three is the transfer case PTO. It bolts to the rear of the t-case. It is found tanker trucks, wreckers, poleseters, and any other truck with a rear winch. IMO the t-case PTO is the most versatile for a rear PTO because you have 5 foward speeds and one reverse at full engine hp.

Sorry about that doghead. The situation has been rectified.

So, the PTOs are not present unless the equipment present required it, but can be added later on with the appropriate parts. Good to know.

Back to reading the TM for now.
