Fuel Filter too short. Part missing?

I bought the truck last year, still troubleshooting one problem after another. that seller....grrr (but that's another story)
this time it's the fuel filter.
looked okay from the outside, i thought "yes, these guys at least did the fuel filter"
but hell no, there wasn't even a filter IN the canister.

i have the filter. (4.25" !)
i have the filter separator (the inner fine tube filter)
but when i put these in the housing, they would rattle in it.
i think there is a "water separator"-something missing on the bottom of the canister. (there is a "scribe mark" within)

this piece is not on the explosion charts in the TMs.

That looks odd... you can see where there was a shelf around the 2" mark on the ruler... I have my filter canister sitting out, Ill take a picture of it tomorrow. It looks like your missing about a 1 to 1 1/2" piece that sits in the bottom of the canister.. No bueno.....

i have the 2 filters and the rubber seal, and there is nothing more depicted in the TMs (like i said)
besides the picture in the TM is wrong in at least 2 spots:
it shows a flat seal, which is round in reality. it shows the seal underneath the filter, which sits above the filter between canister and lid.
so i thought, they forgot to depict a part within the filter, or even better: that part has something to do with the water separator and they forgot to show the lid seal completely and labeled that part as the lid seal by mistake.
(would't be the first time that the TM pics are inaccurate)

nevertheless is the setup too short to match the mating surface of the lid.
there's almost an inch long gap.

Looks like you're missing a large metal washer that sits under the filter if I'm reading the exploded diagram and your pictures correctly.

according to the TM this "washer" underneath the filter is the rubber o-ring seal (see item no8. also that "washer" would be 1-1.5" thick.
but again, i think they screwed this diagram and references up, maybe...

Your missing the spacer that sets a couple of inches above the bottom of the filter housing.
can't find it anywhere.
part number?
picture?

meanwhile i thought, if the "bottom" of the casing may be the reason for the scribe mark, because it is a lose item in the tube???

There is no spacer...correct filter, o-ring, water separator is all that is needed, you can even remove and cap off the transducer as it’s not needed, you won’t be using ste/ice.
correct filter is 4in long

The canister is 4 3/4 from top to water separator shelf, looks like you have the 5in version no longer mfg’d.
HPG lists a 4in and 5in filter...the 5in is mfg discontinued.

this information is helpful! i wonder why i'm the first guy to deal with that and writes about it...
HPG lists a fuel filter spacer, NSN 5365-01-272-7504, anyone ever seen that?

...besides upgrading to a more convenient filter system, i could just build a 1.5" spacer from an exhaust tube to go with my 4 1/4" filter?

maybe they soon realised, that a inch smaller canister is easier to unmount from the vehicle (but still a pita).

option a:
build a spacer of exactly one inch. concern is: does it need a correct flat surface like the washer at the bottom or does it just have to be a tube spacer where the filter sits on the edge... (i have 8 of those 4¼" filters, that no one needs)

option b:
buy aftermarket cartridge type kit for future convenience

FWIW, it would give me great pleasure and an excuse to just do a spin on filter mod... If you just wanna get by for now you could surely cut a piece of some fuel proof material that only needs to support enough of the filter to keep
it toward the upper end of the canister.. Just my 2cents.. Plenty of spin on options out there I’m sure, just haven’t jumped into that one yet..

yeah, but i would cut, grind and test fit half a day and still think i have a steel tube in there...

improvement is the way to go here... already unmounted the bracket. there's more than 10 inches room in the stock location to mount the filterhead. there may be better locations (although every other location is tight with stuff too) but this way it don't need rerouting the hoses... also, the filterhead i'm looking to put in (around $ 40. spare filters are $ 4) has an extra set of outlets, that i will plug now, but eventually get to use for a aux heater unit. another plus: these types do have a built in pump!

it took some hours, because i fabricated 2 plates to strenghten the area and close of the 2 holes of the old filter bracket (but i'm mounting a foldable cup holder to that spot, later on).
one aluminum plate is behind the filter, another stainless plate is on the inside the cab behind the dash. kept the bolts as short as possible, so that they don't interfere with the vent switch cables.
might not necessarily need that doubling, but i feel better that way, if i ever need some force to unscrew a stuck filter.

i used an upgraded version of the aforementioned one. this one has an anti-flowback-valve and even more important has the vent screw on the left side (the other one had it on the right side, and that would be hard to reach). $60 is still affordable.
i had to plug 3 holes off, used some thread sealer.

there's is plenty room for an even longer filter, and these are cheap items. has no label, but supposedly a china product, so it might be available in the US, too.

thanks for helping out with the starting question. i could have bought a different stock filter case, but over here it'll cost me even more than what i invested. (always have to consider that comparison here. improvement is often cheaper)

Excellent work.. I agree, improvement and simplification are the only reason I’m still alive today. That’s gonna serve you well in the future 👊🏼👍🏼

I haven't torn into my truck much. Is that area where it mounts aluminum?
If it is did you make sure to put some type of barrier between the stainless plate and the aluminum? The two metals definitely don't play nice together and putting them directly against each other is asking to corrode out the aluminum.
(I typically use 20 mil PVC tape whenever I'm putting dissimilar metals together)

i bought this:
Filterhead-Set with Filter ST 302 with 10mm Hose Fitting (Schlauchtüllenset)
but i'm considering to move up to ST 354 next filter-change, which should also fit in the gap.
Since you need one 10mm Inlet and one smaller 8mm Outlet i ordered a matching Set of 8mm Hose Fittings. (was too lazy to ask if they'd sell me a Kit with one each).
That shop also has the Kits in the Bay, but it says, they only ship EU. (just ask them. or if you want, i can also give them a call)

i had a quick look in the Bay.com and also on Ali, but neither of which has these kind parts listed... ...mysterious. typically a marine application, i think. if you google the embossing "AD7028", you'll find them in New Zealand, but nowhere else.
