Do a search and you will see people have tried to move the engine over just enough to get it off. Chain falls / come along tied to a tree to pull motor over. Do not get me started. Myself I think IP removal is easer but then again I was dropped on my head as a baby.

When I was running diesel generators in the Navy, we were taught to suspect fuel injectors not cutting off completely after the injection stroke and or worn piston rings when lube oil dilution was indicated. One or both might account for the start up smoke. The smoke usually lessens when the pistons and rings expand. The Navy considered 7% fuel dilution in the lube oil to be in crankcase explosion territory.
